    Last Take..Sugarpine

This is the same lake I posted a couple months ago. I went back and re-shot it yesterday with a new lens and took into perspective all the great critiques (good and bad) that I received from everyone the last time I shot this. I was hoping for a little more sharpness and clarity this time. The clouds were not as dramatic as I hoped, and the wind never really laid down enough for an all glass reflective shot. You just can never really predict what mother natures is going to give you. The snow had melted from the last storm as well..bummer. Here it is, what do you think?

Honestly, I like this much better than any of the previous versions you posted. Even without the glassy water, this one is looking very, very good.

I especially like the effect from the "middle island" which generates a great DoF. The overall feeling to me is what will happen next.

Good job, Canyon Hiker! A beautiful scene, and I really like the "doubled" mirrored effect you captured.

A beautiful landscape and the colours are wonderful. The reflection is perfect but not to perfect if you know what I mean, with the wind causing that very slight ripple.

One very minor nit pic and it could be the conditions that I am viewing it in, the trees on the left look a tad dark and could do with a very small amount of extra brightness. (I will check this tonight on my home monitor.

Beautiful scene, Darin. Nice work with keeping everything in focus with the great dof. As Roger stated. there is a good amount of ripple in the water so that it is not too mirrored which sometimes is not good.
Its a tranquil place and you have brought that back to us nicely.

I think it is beautiful. Ripples or not. The horizon is centered but with reflections sometimes that is a good thing. Next time you might try a longer exposure even if you have to use an ND filter. A longer exposure would have given the lake a glassy look. Nothing wrong here though.

Sometimes I feel silly posting, everyone here is so very skilled I feel like a broken record. This shot is beautiful, I did a double take when it opened. I love the color, the ripple in the water, I always like movement in a phots. This is a framer for sure. I didnt see your other one, but this one is, as I said, beautiful.

    Darin,

Absolutely beautiful, as far as the slight ripple in the water, I think it actually adds to the impact of the photo. IMHO sometimes in our quest for perfection we tend to forget that nature does not always cooperate with us, and a good photographer learns to work with what he/she has available.

For my money you have crushed this one into the upper deck, a Grand Slam!! 2 X

    Re: Last Take..Sugarpine

Thanks every one for all of the comments!!
This lake has been a project at work without a doubt for me. Ive shot this at least a dozen times in the last year and in doing so I have learned a lot from it. One being that timing is everything. Being there as the storm is rolling in or or out is crucial. With the sun setting directly to my back cresting the canyon , there is a short window when the lighting works, about 5-10 minutes is all. Anything too early will result in the trees being half lit up by the sun, and if you wait longer than a few minutes when the sun has risen off the trees you will loose the sun behind the canyon and have no reflection to lite up the clouds. And then there is the wind. Its always blowing here due to that it is in the middle of a canyon.
I had my Dad tag along with me for this trip and he ws ready to pack the bags before the window opened. He soon after saw how fast the window opens then closes for a decent shot. One thing I have learned through my many trial and errors the last couple years is to be pacient, and wait, wait, wait. It might only happen one time out of fifty when the door finally opens, but it is usally worth the wait.
I still really want this shot with snow covering the trees. That's an even finer line. It sits right on the snow line at 3,800ft. When it does get snow it usually melts within a day. So the puzzle of getting there right after the storm, at sunset, when there is no snow falling, with blue sky mixed in, and the wind not knocking me off my feet, is my next challenge.I have never seen that picture for this lake and I have hunted through all the resources I could find to track one down. Maybe not this year or the next, but some time its bound to happen..I hope. And some people ask why I am so intrigued by landscape photography..lol. With the challenge there is great reward..doesn't get any better than that!!

    Thanks again everyone, much appreciated

Darin that is a valuable lesson I also learned. Timing is everything. Being patient and waiting. You can never force the issue and make it work.

Great shot. I like most everything about it -- the composition, sharpness, mood... But the color steals the show here. I like the cool blue, really makes you feel like it was a cold day (even if it wasn't). The sharpness seems fine to me, but I know what you mean: when you have trees like this you want it as super sharp as you can get to record all the detail.

Question - is this an HDR? Looks a bit like it. Any other processing here? Just wondering.

Perfect cut and properly balanced. Excellent light in critical condition.
Good colors. Very nice reflection slightly ruffled.
A photo like this one to be admired in all its beauty should be shown without reduction.
