Lashes

I'm lucky to have three beautiful miniature subjects (with long lashes). It wasn't until I got my SLR that I was able to really capture their eyes. The window reflection in her eyes bothers me but I would not know where to begin with editing and I only have Paint.net right now.

Looks very good.

If I were you I'd crop a bit off the left, a tiny bit off the top and also give the brightness a slight boost. Some sharpening might help too, since the camera quite possibly focused on her nose instead of on the eyes. (Too dark to tell accurately). As for the window reflections – they don't bother me at all – in fact, I think they actually add to the overall "feeling".

I, too, like the catch lights in her eyes.
The problem is the eye(s) aren't the focal point which seems to be the nose.

What should I have done differently to change the focal attention?

My F/4, ISO-1600, Metering-Pattern, Focal length-45mm. I believe I was shooting on SV on automatic continuous.

That's better! :thumbsup: I do think it still needs more cropping on the left, to "balance out" the eyes, otherwise they seem too "cramped" toward the right side of the frame.

Just drag the crop box down from the upper-left corner (preserving current aspect ratio) until the crop-box edge almost reaches her eyebrow. I could do a quick crop and post it here if you want.

If you are using CAF (Continuous Auto Focus), make sure that the selected AF-point is perfectly positioned over your subject for several seconds before taking the photo. In this case your subject is the eye-lashes. If the AF-point is moved off the subject, then the camera will automatically refocus on whatever it is pointed at.

You could also try manual focus, potentially more accurate for this type of photography – though slower.

That would be great if you could edit it. I cropped in a little but felt like I lost too much of the lower part of her face. I am only working with paint.net and I know it does not have near the capability of Photoshop.

I am finding I like manual better so I probably try that next time. I have about 2000 pictures since getting my camera yesterday so It is hard to not break the 5 a day rule .

Here's my editing attempt. Took the 2nd image you posted, cropped it, applied a bit of NR and also some UnSharp Mask.
