    Lady's Man

Well, at least that was one name that's been suggested for this little fellow along with about 100 others . They were turned out today in the outdoor arena, and the colt had a blast. Poor Lady was looking exhausted trying to keep him by her side. These are a few of the shots that I think came out best. I apologize for the poor scan quality.

Any thoughts, suggestions, and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

These are very good shots. I particularly like the shot of Lady and the colt. It looks like you really move around to get some good angles and I think you've done a good job with these. The colors look a little flat, but i think that is mostly due to the scanning.

I like the bottom pic the best. The one of the colt from the side running, with just the fence behind it. I can see the whole body and head of the colt in that shot, and you captured it in a running sort of action, and the fence behind him is not distracting.
The other shots have elements in the background that are distracting (except the top one) and the angles are either not great and not close enough.
The Top one is also a nice image of Poor Lady running with her colt.

I really like the last 2. The 3rd one is almost an "adult" look to it, you can't really tell it is a colt ( 0 is the grand total of horse shot I have done in my life by the way). The 4th is the coolest, because it is showing the colt running, but it also emphasises how wobly his feet are still.
The 2nd one does't work for me, because I can't see much of the colt, and everything is dead centre.
Oh yeah, the 1rst one is also good, what would be great is another one, where mum and colt look like they are running together more (I know this one is showing that, but you can clearly see that the colt is running, but you have to look for where the mum's feet are to figure out she is running too).
Opinions I got lots, expertise none!! Hmm… except for giving opinions!!

I used my Minolta Maxxum 7000. It's an older camera but a great workhorse. I had a 70-300mm zoom on.

I always like looking at your horse photos. One thing I wondered here is if you should get a little lower - at eye level with the little one.

I definitely like the first shot the best as it has a deeper context to the place and timing, beyond just "young horse running and bucking" type deal. I also like the framing quite a bit as the maire makes a very nice backdrop to the bouncy colt.

I will say that the shot could be a tad sharper. Not sure if it's the JPEG or just the shot since the others look soft as well. I've had some similar issues so I'm just wanting to make you aware that maybe your JPEG process or your focusing is a bit off. Maybe next time shoot with a bit less DOF and a faster shutter speed to really get those eyes and the horses' hair nice and sharp?.
