    Knight in Macro

I attended a presentation on macro photography this past week and thought to try it out. Have several pics - I may share more - but this one is fun (I think).

Nice shot! I would like to see the point of the lance in focus. You probably cannot get it with aperture only, but a second shot layered in (focus stack) would be easy with nothing but black around it. - Terry

The knight seems rather soft (might just be me) and it appears that the butt of the lance, seems to be the most in focus part of the image.

I like it though, I'm just starting to do some macro shots since I got my extension tubes so much fun to play with. Lets see some other ones, I'm intrigued 8)

Yeah, I think it needs more sharpness/ DoF. Macros really beg for the deepest DOF you can get away with: f 32 if you can. It requires a tripod or another stabilizing device to shoot that small though. Tripods may be hard to get this low to the ground. Interesting subject, and good placement in the frame.

Agree with the comments already made and I would like to see more, in particular, the same subject matter shot from different angles.

I like the idea of this shot as well. I am missing definition of the horse's head though. It gets lost in the surrounding colors.

I may have to buy a whole set and have at it! Don't know if I will have time. My son is really into Mario - so maybe a Nintendo set? By the way, the DOF was done like that on purpose ....I like the spear going out of focus ...but I will try it all sharp as well :-)

Tell us about your setup for this picture - What lens, settings, extension tubes, etc that you used.

It can be super tough to get a large DOF with a macro lens or extension tubes. Overall, I really like what you've done with the picture.

    Re: Knight in Macro

Sure Jim ...I have a four thirds Oly (E-410) and I actually used a 50mm prime lens (Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 lens) from an old OM system - and combined it with a inexpensive extension tube (not sure what size right now, but the smallest one). The camera was set on a tripod and it was set on fully manual mode - the camera was doing spot metering, ISO 200 with natural morning light illuminating the left side of the knight and a gold reflector bouncing some light from the other side. The f stop was set to 1.8 the entire shoot ...but I actually intended to get extremely narrow band of sharp focus .so, the spear is not sharp (and a few other things as well) - and I sort of liked that .....I am torn on everything needing to be sharp ...not sure what that I would like it ...but, next time, I will get the f stop to 11 or so, and see what I get ... :-)
