Just like momma used to make...

    ...Mmmmm, delicious Martinis LOL

One of my favorites from Monday night's vintage shoot, up in the air about the direction processing should take, though...

Hey Jet, this is very cool. I love the 50's style pin-up photography. I think your models expression is excellent, really makes the shot. The hair is good, although could have been a bit "bigger" but its fine. The pearl necklace and red lipstick right on.
I'm feeling though that the somewhat off white background is not adding anything here and if you wanted to take this further in post processing i would suggest applying a yellow background or a light teal blue, think of the car colors of the 50's and you get the idea. There were lots of pastel like colors but saturated. Color was a big thing then and really boomed in photography and movies in that era.
I'm not crazy bout the way her right arm is cut off in the frame, but otherwise the pose and look is right on.
Certainly looks retro, i would just introduce a color into that background. Maybe a red rose in the hair. . .
    great work

Can't fool me! You found an old magazine and took a picture of an ad.

I'm not sure about the bg, whether some other color would look better or not, but I do wish there was a tad more room on the left.

Looks just like a 50s martini add. I can't fault it except perhaps an olive in the glass.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

Color and saturation just spot on for 50's ad.

Her arm being cut off sort of bothers me, but it's a great shot.

Yeah it's awesome, but the arm crop is pretty disconcerting...

Nice picture just needs some colour and her arm, unless she is one armed then I am sorry for mentioning it. ;)

Hah. Very funny Nicci. When I was in college a friend of mine and I went sky diving. I walked by and said something to one of the guys that was packing our shoots. He did not reply. So I looked at my friend and said, "He's way too cool to talk to us." Then somebody told me he was deaf.

    So yeah...

As the photo loaded, it revealed her face first, and then her delightful expression. The next thing I saw is the crease/shadow in her arm pit, which drew my attention. I think you need to obscure that area a bit by cropping or a little blurring or something unless you have another shot with that great expression where she is turned a little. The margarita glass is a little hot on my MacBook, which is brighter than the other monitors I have. Overall the light is very nice.

Re: Just like momma used to make...

OK, I have about 55 shots with this hair/background/glass all with different facial expressions, but none with the same as above and many with the arm cropped to one degree or another - the perils of shooting tight. This one may be a bit "over the top" processing wise, but it has both arms, no unsightly creases/shadows and a new improved yellow background.

Re: Just like momma used to make...

I have to say that I like both but the second is better as her arm is not chopped so badly.
When I said it needed more room on the left for the first one, I was mostly noticing how close her hair was to the frame and that giving ;a bit more room on that side would also show more arm. I also realize that if this isn't already cropped it is a moot point as there is nothing to be done now but maybe think about it next time.
Now plenty of her shows in the second. I like her skin in both because it has that 50s magazine ad look. I really don't like the yellow background. Its a 50s color but just too saturated imho. If you can tone it down I think it would be better.

One of the really positive points in both is that she looks to have been really enjoying her vodka and I hope she is either at home or has a ride from someone who hasn't been partaking.

Re: Just like momma used to make...

Yep the composition of the second is way more satisfying. The saturation seems a bit intense, and the sharpness is not as good as the first. But I love the expression.

Re: Just like momma used to make...

    Frog,
Thanks for your thoughts - no alcohol was abused in the filming of these events, the glass is filled with water (that shot I did of the glass of Crown Royal a while back was actually iced tea )

    Daq,
Used a totally different processing type on the second to try to get that magazine illustration look. At full resolution it is tack sharp, the difference is that the second (of 3) layers is blurred with the blend mode set to multiply at about 40% opacity which gives it that dreamy/glowy/super saturated airbrush look.

Re: Just like momma used to make...

Jet, the second one is great with the crop and expression as well, although not quite as quirky and fun as the first, but still very cool. i love the yellow background, its perfect hue but I also think just reduce overall saturation on it so it allow the colors in her hair and dresss to shine out as well.
I'm not crazy bout the softness/blur diffuse lighting effect thats going on with the layer blending bit it personal preference really. My only other main issue other than bg saturation is the loss of color in her hand and glass. something happened there, although it does not look like blowout, but the color loss looks a bit odd.
    Nitpiks, love this.
Looks like it was good fun.

Hmmmmmmm I love Pin-ups! I always wanted to take some 50ish shots...I love the overall concept around this photo session Jet.
I have to say I agree with all of what Gary has pointed, both proīs and conīs.

I think these will look better if you crank down a bit the general EXP. Here in my monitor the are some areas that seem almost blown and thus the colors are little crispy on extreme do to this.
Also on shot 2 the hand is much whiter..dunno why but it will look better with the same general tones of the rest of the shot.

Great work Jet! Can wait to see the final outcome!
