Shot for motion effect. This is the bay Area{Los Altos,ca}
Northbound Interstate 280 also know as the Junipero Serra freeway
Hill top vantage point about 800 feet.
62mm focal length Several different f-stops starting at f/4.5-f/8 and shutter speeds of 4 sec. thru 1.1 seconds. One image shot in Auto mode {the one with the least defined car lights.} My fav' is #3 D80/Tokina AF28-70

What a neat opportunity you've got here. The road certainly swishes around enough for some interesting car trail shots. #3 is my favorite too. I'm seeing some over exposure and bleed going on within your light trails on the road itself. They also appear very soft, while the mountains are in sharp focus indicating a too shallow DOF throughout. I think the problem is your choice of aperture. I would have started at F11 and worked up to F13 or F22, since you still had light in the sky. I always manually adjust the shutter speed so that would be a fiddle point somewhere in the region of 6-15+ seconds I should think or just set the camera to aperture priority. Give it a try and see what you think. :thumbsup:

Hi Rick:

I like the idea of combining the sunset natural light with the night scene provided by the lights of the cars. The S curve of the highway leading into the scene fits as well.

I would have used a graduated neutral density filter to keep the colour in the sky but bring out more detail in the S curve in the foreground through controlling exposure in the two different areas.

Thanks C.L. Kunst / Ronnoco for the feedback. I do have a ND filter, I can shoot this with my 1.8D for better F/stop control, avail. lighting.
This location is 3 miles from my home.I'll try it again.

IMO, The 4th one is the best, But the car lights are a bit too heavy.

i prefer number one but they are all a bit fuzzy and lacking detail to me..

hard to get right thow without repeated tries..
