    Iowa Winter

I was wondering what you all thought about this one. And yes it was very cold, and was taken through the windshield.

Hmmmm. Maybe the window acted as a filter of sorts, in combination with the clowds over the sun, but this is one of the most detailed snow pix I've seen. Do you have a tinted windshield?
Some may say there isn't much in the shot, except blowing snow, but I think that is what makes it work. Nice shot.

    Re: Iowa Winter

I think this photo reveals the conditions excellently.
Yeah, the sun is way blown out but in this case it doesn't bother me at all.
    Nice shot!

    Re: Iowa Winter

    Brrrr.

The only thing I don't like about it is the wavy line things in the sky most prominent toward the left. What/why is that?

Your capture of the sun trying so desperately to warm things up is great!

I've been wanting to try to get a shot like this myself. I think you've captured the feel of a midwestern winter very well!

I like everything but the blown-out Sun.

The detail in the lower half (or lower third?) of the frame is great.

I do like the first one in the second series as much as the original one you posted.

You can get some very interesting and good effects playing with filters in photoshop.

    Re: Iowa Winter

Hate to be wishy-washy, but looking at it now on another monitor, the sun doesn't bother me at all. And compositionally-speaking, I definitely like the uncropped one the best.

And that snow blowing across the road rocks.

    Re: Iowa Winter

I still like the first one best. With the sun it just really captures how cold it is. That the sun can be out and be so bright, but it is still that cold!

LOVE the first one posted, and if not for the streak in the glass, the first pic of the second set is pretty darn good too!

Wow.. These shots make an impression! They might need a little more contrast to make them more photographic so to speak, but the subject speaks for itself. Glad I live down south

Am I the only one seeing the subtle wavy lines in the left sky? Maybe my moniter is whacked.

or dirty? I'm constantly thinking I have sensor dust when a good monitor wipe would get rid of it. At least its easier than cleaning a sensor.

    Re: Iowa Winter

I love this picture, and I like it in its un-cropped, un-edited version best. I'm usually a fan of vivid colors, but something about that first one was very beautiful with the more muted colors. My windshield would be way too dirty for me to get a clear shot through it. =) That first pic without the editing is a keeper. And the others in the series have potential, but might need some subtle work.
I'm a beginner photographer experimenting with lighting, and different editing techniques in photoshop cs3, and paint shop pro.

I'd like critiques from both sides of the camera. A photographer's point of view, and what you would like to see if the picture was of you (or your child) and you'd paid to have these taken. My ultimate goal is to improve my technique and style, and be the best that I can be.

    Your help is appreciated!

It's a good shot that I don't want to see. I've been in those kind of conditions in Wyoming, and you can have it.

    Re: Iowa Winter

All of these offer the mood and isolated feel of the scene. I like them all. The first one with the sun is the better of the bunch I feel, and as I was hoping there was an uncropped version to be seen, there you posted it. That uncropped version is by far the best.
I do think that a slight crop off the top half way down to the clouds above the sun, and a little off the left side to maintain the aspect ratio can improve. This will cut away some of the empty sky and also help bring your horizon line up and away from center.
Just a slight crop as mentioned and adjust nothing else, it's great.

    Re: Iowa Winter

I like the second one best, overall composition. But I do see a flare the needs taken out on the right. Though the first one has a better overall composition with the signs I think the bright sun would be a problem if printed up. But these are still very good considering the conditions, just a little TLC and all would be stunning wall hangers. Nice.....

    Re: Iowa Winter

Sorry guys but the sun in the original annoys me too much. Interestingly I thought the edited version made it a less intrusive aspect of the photo.
