    Hello Kathleen,

Welcome aboard! From a technical point of view. I don't think that there is anything to say about your pictures. They are all sharp, contrasty and well exposed.

I would say that I like the first, the second and the third best. Obviously the background is very busy in most pictures. That's part of the deal since it's a scrapyard but I think that I would try tighter crop like for instance getting rid of the road.

    regards

    Seb

    thanks!

i noticed the road after i had taken the photos and didnt like that part of them at all.
it was hard for me to see what i was shooting - it was so dang bright outside that i
couldnt see the screen on my digi cam. but anyways, it was like a test shoot. im
going back and hopfully i will come back with some better photos. i have 5 more
that i wanted to post...but rules are rules...so perhaps i will post them up tomorrow! i really appreciate your feedback.
    thanks.

Kathleen, I am looking forward to seeing more of your posts. I like your choice of B&W for these pictures. A tighter crop to bring out and zoom in on what you are looking for in these pictures, would be more helpfull.

Remember, it is about allowing us to share what was going through your mind at the time of the picture, not what you were seeing with your eyes. At least, that's what I try to do with my pictures (although, i am not good at it yet).
Opinions I got lots, expertise none!! Hmm… except for giving opinions!!

    Hey kathleen,
welcome to this forum. All of these are nice and b&w is the best choice for these, i think. i agree with Seb about the tighter crops working best here, and also like the 1st 2nd and 3rd shots the best. Good stuff !

Hi Kathleen. There's no reason to be intimidated at all. For one thing, everyone here is generally very supportive of other people and their work. For another, these are *good*! The second and third in particular catch my eye for some reason. But in general, you obviously have an eye for shape and light (the BW suits these shots), and all are sharp and well-composed. Keep them coming.

Welcome to the site. You'll find many accomplished photographers here and many helpful, friendly people, which is more important. I like these shots and would suggest for next time, that you think about how to isolate parts of them to really make the viewer look at what you want them to see. Adjusting your camera's aperture to blur some of the background can do this, as well as choosing different angles and camera heights. When I looked at your lsat photo, for example, I started wondering how cool it might be if you got abotu a foot from that fan and started blasting away.

Nice to have you with us.

I think you will find this a good place to share and learn. We try to be as supportive of your ideas and images as possible. I have found that the members here are encouraging and helpful. Post more and respond to others that is what makes this board work. Check out and contribute to the other board here at PR as well there is something for everyone or more important for what ever your mood is at the moment. I love your use of B&W in the images you posted, you did a nice job with the conversion. I like some of the other fell that you have given us to much information in each photo to try and process. With the exception of #2 I think all your image could be improved with a more aggresive crop. I think you will also find more of an in depth critique when you post one or two photos in a thread, people seem to take more time to look at the image and analysis it. Welcome again and keep up the quality post.

This is a good start and best tip is from lava lamp, get in close and grab some good ones.Have done a crop on my favourite to show you how i would have done it. Hmmm must try and get in to one of our scrap yards and have a go at this.

    Kathleen,

Welcome. No need to be intimidated. Most of us are harmless.

Some advice on the shots, eliminate anything that does not pertain to your subjects, and keep the backgrounds clean of distractions. In such a cluttered environment it's not easy, but can be done.

I would have loved to see these in color. I'm sure the rust made some really nice colors.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.
