I never seem to be able to get things right in my portraits!

I never seem to be able to get things right in my portraits!
Why is this? Where am I going wrong?

I know the twins are too close to the backdrop but I am limited for space. Exlude that one from the critique.

The only compliant I have is you have cut off there heads (only in two off them). All of them are very good, and you are getting better but the last photo you up loaded you cut off the head! ;)

One basic problem with you share with other photographers in these forums is not following two basic rules involved in the judging of portraits and for that matter other photos as well in high level competitions.

If the dark area of a portrait or other photo is so dark that almost all detail is lost, then you have goofed badly on lighting and exposure. No detail in dark areas is literally unexposed film.

In studio portraits use a hair light from the back. Hair or any part of the head or clothes must not blend into the background. If it does, then you have totally blown basic portrait techniques. (Several photos of members display this problem.)
