    I love old warbirds...

I took this at an air show and would like some feedback (my biggest area of concern is the fact the prop is frozen and not blurred for an indication of speed - I guess I could use photoshop to correct this, but is it really an issue?)

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: I love old warbirds...

This is cool and thanks for reminding me. There is an air show at Van Nuys airport in June. I better look in to it.

The exposure, frozen prop, and the cleanliness of the plane makes it look like a toy. Don't mean to sound too blunt but that's how looks to me. I still think it is cool just knowing that it is real.

I've never shot planes before before but I remember enjoying airplane coffee books when I was younger. I recall the photos were usually under harsh lighting and the colors were over saturated?

Please share more. What lens did you use? What fstop and shutter speed?

That's sort of the reaction I had - it just didn't look real, yet I took the picture. Although I do like it, it just is off...

    shutter: 1/2500
    f8.0
    ISO 400

    lens (200-400) at 390.00

Camera was a Canon Digital Rebel - not the XT

I think that to get the kind of "action" shots I'd like, I'll probably have to go for a manual speed setting (TV priority). Which of course begs the question of how slow a speed would be the lowest acceptable value and how high of one does the result begin to look "fake"?

(I will have a EOS 30D by the end of the week, so the learning curve begins again.)

    Thanks for the feedback.

A nice photo. Your shutter speed was fast enough to catch that plane without blurring. I love old fighters as well. Have you ever been to Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome? They still fly the old WWI style fighters there. I have some good old shots of Nieuports, Fokkers, and Sopwiths at home somewhere. Nice shot there.

    Great shot.

The only critique I have is to leave the aircraft room to fly into, ie, place it on the left side if it's flying to the right.

I have NO problem with the prop being "frozen". I rather like that look. Troy Bates (screen name IFLY) shoots prop birds with a shutter speed of 125th of a second to get a full rotation of the prop and hence, prop blur. It takes some practice to get sharp images at that shutter speed, but Troy has proven that it can be done, and done well. He shoots in shutter priority to make sure it stays at 125th/second.

I would also shoot at ISO 100 for a couple of reasons. 1: The best image quality possible. 2: It will slow down your shutter speed.

    Hope this helps.

BTW, I also love old warbirds. The P-51 Mustang is my favorite WWII fighter.

    Re: I love old warbirds...

thanks for the feed back - everyone.

    SirMike:

I'm going to have to find out more about the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome - it sounds familiar, but I can't place it.

    Speed:

I'll have to experiment with the 125th/second shutter and ISO 100. There's a municipal airport not too far from here - I should be able to get pictures while planes are on short final. (As long as DHS doesn't freak out about it) With the slower shutter, probably want to use a monopod and get some practice with smooth pans while shooting.

The framing of the shot was difficult - the 300D I was using isn't the fastest responding camera in the world. Plus things were happening way too fast for the autofocus to react properly - I had to hand focus these shots.

    Thanks again!

    P.S.:

The mustang has always been my favorite as well.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I think you'll have better control and luck using AV instead of TV... more precise control over depth of field...

I like this picture, the way the plane is framed in the blue sky surrounded by clouds and I do see motion in the tips of the props.

    Cheers,
