    I liked the lighting..

Thoughts? I'm inclined to say not enough on the subject matter, and wish I had shot it with a tighter aperture, but its in my back yard so I'm sure I'll get another shot

For me, I think the wider ap would've been better. There's too much in focus for me...= lot of distractions in the background. I like the diverse lighting on the bush but the background kills it for me.

EDIT: i like the mountians...but the little town is the killer. my bad.

So would bringing the f/ to a higher number = more blurred background? Or is it with a smaller f/ = wider aperture = small field of focus?

bigger the number, more of background in focus..longer shutter speed required
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!

Light aside, I'm finding your composition lacking.
You basically have a pic of part of a bush that so dominates the frame that even if the background were sharper, it would still be dominated by part of a bush.
    Srry.
