Excellent black and white work is based on tonality. Too much contrast results in totally lost detail in both the dark and bright areas. The result is a weak photo with no apparent centre of interest.

    Re: In Conclusion

    Hi Tuna,
The shot is very interesting. It reminds me of a museum. However, the most comtemplating thing is that the place is not a museum but the guy is studying the thing on the left as if he is stuying a classic painting. The "Epilogue" is a fine touch as it indicates the end of the exhibition. The reflection of 3 semi-arches on the top give the impression that they are windows, which deliver a surreal atmosphere. Is this a dream? Is is real?
    A deep shot.

    Re: In Conclusion

Just wanted to say that the tones on this photo are not that great...but the feeling and moment captured are great AND that makes up for tones. Great streetphotography is not about tones and proper lighting (although that helps ) but a moment captured that lets us observe a slice of the human experience. This photo does just that.
I love the contemplation that seems to be going on (what is he reading, looking at, think, etc.) The repeating patterns and of course the sign all add to this photo. It makes me stop and think for a moment.
In conclusion...this is another great photo.

    Cheers.

    Re: In Conclusion

The mystery of a dark corridor is what grabs me. I'm glad the photo has a person in it. I wish the background was a blurred out moving train though - indeed, at first that's what I thought it was! Might want to consider cropping out the bottom 1/5 of the photo.

Thks for posting, nice to see a moody shot like this occasionally.

    Tuna,

I like the symmetry in your composition and how the light radiate from the background. Actually, I find the scene to have an interesting "graphic" quality as a whole.
My only concern is the slight motion blur of the guy but that's most likely unavoidable considering the circumstances.

Ronnoco: Are you implying that a wider tonal range with lesser contrast would instantly gives more value to the composition of the picture?

    Re: In Conclusion

The tones or contrast are irelevant to me in this case.. This a harsh photograph but it captures the harshness and uglyness of agressive marketing and of the places I hate to be in ie; shopping malls etc (if it's not a shopping mall well then I'm a plonker). The guy in the shot has choosen a quiet time to visit in order to be out of there before the robots return.
Not to be hung over my bed though Tuna.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
