The background is bright, but not overly. You've managed to get a shallow depth of field (and with a point & shoot camera that's quite an accomplishment!) which makes the cat "pop" nicely separating it from the background. Composition is pretty good too, although I think I'd like to see a little more at the top and a little less at the bottom. Sharpness and contrast are also very good. Nice job ;)
The only negatives really are the line in the background running through the cat's butt and ears; and the lack of definition in the black fur, particularly the nose.
If this was shot in RAW then you would have more latitude to edit and shift the brightness.
I adjusted it a bit, lightening the shadows to bring out a little more detail in the fur, and reveal the nose.

You have a very difficult scene there.
Black cat and white background !
It's difficult to know how it's going to turn out, unless your camera has a histogram function.
In which case you can check to make sure that the left (dark) and right (light) ends aren't cut off sharply - that indicates over or under exposure.
