Pretty shot.. Too bad about the telephone lines in there though.

    Seb,

This is a great shot.......I love the lighting, the composition and contrast. I also think the telephone wires are a distraction. Is it possible to crop them out?

    Otherwise, it's excellent IMO.

I know you say you do most of your work in colour, but I think you very definitely have a flair for monochrome. You have a great eye for the composition and tonal ranges that make a good B & W shot. This is just another example. Lovely shot.

    Re: How was church?

Hmm...I thought the telephone lines were barely noticeable. In fact, I only took notice of them because someone else pointed them out. My distraction was that the church looked a bit like it had been pasted in or something had been done after the picture was taken. But, my attention focuses mostly on the rolling field which is quite lovely

Thanks guys, I fully agree about the power line. I am not used to clone stuff out so here is my attempt. The crop of the problematic area is the picture viewed at 100%, without any sharpening. There wasn't any particular post-processing applied to the church in the original version nor was it pasted in lol...

I also did not notice the power lines until someone else mentioned them. While the church (and cross) is the main centre of attention my eye is drawn to the right and the little houses, hills, trees and fields. Very pastoral. Personally I cant help imagining what this looked like in colour.

    Re: How was church?

Much better. The lines on the far left dont seem to make much difference, but the new image without the original's diagonal line, it just looks a lot cleaner.

Seb, hope you don't mind... did an expt to see how it might look w/ a little color... Not the best job in the world, but I think this shot might be a good candidate for spot colored B&W shot. Hand painted that is. what do you think?

    Re: How was church?

I really enjoy the tones and the perspective that this photo has. The sky is the only thing that bothers me. I would like it better if the sky was not blacked out up top. Other than that, I really like this and I have come back to it many times within the past hour and a half.

I vote for photo of the week! I enjoy this shot!

    Re: How was church?

Hi Seb .. another thought: maybe one of the reasons the church looks a little "pasted in" is due to the digital fringing. I often get that kind of thing when a darkish building feature is directly against a clear sky. The only solution I have found is to very carefully clone the sky over the fringe (in this case mainly around the steeple). It is only a few pixels but it makes all the difference when I have had had a similar problem.

It could be that white line down the right hand edge is an unfortunately placed lighning conductor - the JPEG compression would emphasise that contrast edge when reducing the image.

I really enjoy the photo, even with the wires. It's reality, and I love B&W!

    Re: How was church?

Tom: Thank you for sharing your view. Colors were strong and flashy. Somewhat pretty but it just wouldn't convey the feeling I was going after.

GB: Thruthfully, I prefer a pure b&w image (in this specific case) but I am not against your idea. I'll keep that in mind as a reference for the future. Thanks.

    SpeedingSphere: Thanks!

Didache and Smartwombat: Interesting observation. I see what you guys mean. This has to come from jpeg compression for web displaying. A print wont display the issue. Thanks.

    Efeaker: Thanks.
