    Hot Knives ? Cutting Steel.

this image was done at my work, with a group of cutting torches on 1 inch steel, i was impressed on how well the nikon d50 kept most in clear, when so much heat waves floating to the naked eye, the sparks really give the picture action, your comments are most welcomed.

I think you captured the sparkes very well. the bottom of the image is not needed though and having more at the top would have been better. Still, the sparks and their trails are eye candy here.
    Nice.

I don't know if straightening would help and actually doubt it.
I think having the bit of space at bottom helps and have nothing to critique except for positive. If you are in the mood sometime, I think some other angles would be equally interesting.

thanks for all your comments, the picture is already cropped, it shows just enough of the bottom where the flame goes through, this shot is actually the very moment the flame cutting through the steel,as it punches through ,it erupts with sparks, then the machine will move along a predetermined route cutting a line that doesn't spark as much, because the plate is already hot enough, when the cut is done,it moves to a new spot where it needs to blow through,a few seconds later you get another great eruption,i have another shot of it too,but that one has all the torches lined up,i was very fortunate to catch this one showing the torches in a bit of angle. underneath the plate is water, the steel sits on elevated slats of steel, every few months those slats need to be rechanged from getting chewed up by the torches.the bottom image shows alittle reflection of water, the table itself was cropped out.

If you can get that angle, but with more water reflection I think it'd be even better.

That's cool. We have a laser cutter at our plant in Utah, Our laser operator took off the protective shield for me, but my tripod wasn't tall enough to get over the safety fence. I'll try again with a longer lens and taller tripod one of these days. Maybe I'll shoot at the end of the work day so we can turn off the overhead lighting as well.

mattbikeboy: thats great, i took my shot on friday night shift when we have no supervisors around to stop me,and i took my shoot by hand with no tripod, just kneeling to the ground,we have laser cutters too, but located at a different building, the building i work at,it has three flame tables and two other plasma cutting tables, but small, but still cut with torches, with a supervisor around,i don't think they would allow me to stop my work to play around with a camera, but i did have fun doing, already blown up my shots to 8 by 10's ,i'm planning on presenting one framed to one of our flame cutters who retiring in the next two months.thanks for posting.

I agree about the bottom of the frame.

    Nice.
There is a lighter piece their that really adds nothing. I would like to see more at the top too if the sparks are shooting any higher.

None the less, this is a really hot image!
    No, I DON'T need that.

Re: Hot Knives ? Cutting Steel.

thanks for everyone's comments, its nice to finally get one shot fairly decent, its funny while i was taking the shot,i happened to notice the the first torch flame was fanned out more so,than the others,i told the operator,he stretched downward and agreed that his tip was wearing abit more rapidly than the others, and was in need of changing soon, just think,i could have saved him from making errors in the near future for bad cuts.i've seen them cut inch and half thick plates and the spark eruption is very great, sparks shooting as high as ten feet, so getting high sparks would be great but then the camera would capture more distracting images in the frame that would take away from the subject. i hope to do more in the future, thanks for all the views and comments all.
