    Hood Ornament - Pierce Arrow

I converted this to b & w because there was a hot spot that I couldn't dodge away and still have it retain the right color. This is from a '30's Pierce Arrow. Is the crop ok? Since the arrow was pointing to the right, I wanted to give it plenty of room to go that way.

    John,

A couple of items on this, one my preference would have been a bit more on the left and a little more on the bottom to see the base of the stand.

Other than that nicely seen and I really like this in B&W.

I hope you made some pictures of the car also! These are some of the great classics!

I agree that it needs more context, either some more of the radiator or as part of the sweep of the hood.

Not really fond of this b/w variant. The tonality is flat. The coloration of old caps and ornaments is part of their charm. They will work in mono but requires for me something other than this type of background.

Thanks fellas......I would rather have posted the original, but I felt the blown out spot really hurt the shot. This was my first time shooting vintage cars. I hope to get back to the car museum where this was taken to really explore.

Very nicely done. The convert to b&w was correct I think. To me old stuff like this begs for b&w because that is most likely how it would have been shot back then. I would not mind seeing the original. I would agree on a little more context, though I would not do too much on the left. As far as the bg, done properly with a shallow dof, the bg would be nothing but blut anyway.

I find myself wanting to see more of the car -- perhaps a wide-angle shot with the same detail in the ornament, but with more the car in the back blurred out behind it.

I was pretty unhappy with the way all the shots I took that day turned out, so I chose not to keep them on this computer. I saved what I could, this being one of 'em. Being the first try at something like this, I know what to do next time--promise.

John, are you following me around? I think I am going to put a rearview mirror on my camera....first this guy from another paper follows me around Indy two weekends in row trying to find out what our paper is doing and now I post shots from a car show and you do Oh, wait, there were no PA's at the simple little car show I was at

Just giving you a rough time John, but I was serious about the other guy...lol, did I ever burn him! He came up to me one day with a big smile and says "I just got the local princess and she posed for me".... my response was short and sweet.... I got her three days ago, no posing, she was kissing the yard of bricks with some school kids, and I got some others of her with the kids and other princesses....I didn't hear a peep the rest of the month.... He works for a paper in a town where we just started a new weekly.

Anyway, lets see some more of your photos from the show. I do agree with the one who mentioned having more of the car in the photo, however this is a great profile view of the ornament. One certain people would like for their records on how the item looks so it does have a value in that respect for collectors. Taking these kinds of shots never hurts.
