    Hiking (flash fill first)

went out on a hike... at the worst time of the day... tried using my flash as a fill light while keeping in mind all the advice I received here... worked really well. Don't know why I haven't done this before.

    Re: Hiking (flash fill first)

 Sometimes one just has to give something a try to see how it will work. I'm pretty sure your subject's face would have been a lot darker and/or required a bunch of post processing without the fill flash.
I seldom use mine either because I fail to think about it when I should.
    Good job.

    Re: Hiking (flash fill first)

The funny thing is that it was just on the start of the hike. I was just checking settings and making sure my camera is ready incase I need to grab and shoot. I asked him to just stand there for a second and he posed jokingly. I took a picture, complained about the lighting and he recommended I use the flash. lol. He reminded me and I attempted to use it in the rest of the hike. Made me realize why I would need a better flash. This was the first picture I worked on and wanted to share. I just had to send it to him since we laughed about his pose the rest of the hike.

Yeah, they refer to this technique as killing the ambient. I haven't used it much myself despite lugging flashes around with me all the time.
