    Highways

The last print from this weekend. Thinking about doing a series on roads and their impact on the enviroment?

This is truly great! I love how the highway run through the frame at angle, increasing depth. I also like the pattern of the tree branches and how it fill the sky. The tone are fine as well. That's a definite keeper as far as I am concerned.

    Re: Highways

I like this one too. I had a "hmm" response to it when I first saw it.

What I like about it personally is the dissonance between the highway and the tree. Living right next to each other, but so different! Nicely done, imo. There are no elements in the scene which are distracting, which is odd, given the busy highway bustling overhead. You've done a good job singling out your subject and your message here.

My only nit is the top of the tree being cut off in the frame. That urks me. But I am looking at it from a "landscape photography" point of view and I think your crop works if you are showing this in a series, like you mentioned. Your crop draws attention back to the relationship between your two subjects which is the real focus of this picture.

I'm with Rick on this one. This shot is great, though I would have loved to see a little more tree included. The tones are great and the composition is very strong!

    Well done Tao!

    Thanks fellas.
This is by far my best results from the darkroom.
The tree could use some room, but I liked how it seemed to anchor the photo, especially with the shadows. I would like to try with a wider angle, but then I couldn't shoot on the Yashica and the 120 film allows me to go BIG.

    Cheers.

I loved this immediately! Don't know what it is, but some photos just catch the eye and hold it there for a while. This one did that for me. Great job

Yes, this one has a very interesting 1950s/60s move feel to it, like fahrenheit 451 or another flick depicting the future. (I dont know how that sounds, but that's what comes to mind.)

    Re: Highways

    Thank you amithi & GB1!

GB - I just out Fahrenheit 451 on my netflix list.

I think some of the antique feel could come from the sky...the print has this weird sepia look to it in the sky and I can't figue out if it was smog or what. The other thing on the print that no one noticed, is that the upper left corner is whiter than the rest of the sky. The neg does not look to have this problem, but it is apparent in print. Could have been the filter or enlarging lens, who knows.

Anyway, I'm excited to get good comments and I look forward to printing this bigger.

    Cheers.

    Re: Highways

I really like this, and I like your idea for a series. The composition is perfect in my opinion. I like how the tree fills the sky. The highway is almost fencing in the tree, as you move up and to the left.

The upper left corner being light is barely noticable. The enlarger I use has a little red filter that rotates in and out from under the lens. I've had a similar problem on a print, because I didn't realize it wasn't pushed completely out of the way.

Is this cropped any? I notice it's slightly taller than square. I have a Yashica 124G also. I've only put a few rolls through it, but I noticed my negatives aren't really square.

Anyway. Nice shot! I'm interested to see more from your series.

    Re: Highways

    Thanks paul.

No, the photo is not really cropped, I took a little bit of the edges so I didn't get a border.
On the easel it looked square (measured) and I do not recall noticing the neg being taller than square.
I just went and measured the print and it is about an 1/8" taller Good eyes. I also measure my negs and they seem to be 1/32" taller. I guess I'll have to compensate for this when enlarging. Interesting.

I hope your having a great time with your camera...I have been. Although I have only used it on a tripod and cable release. I would love to more candid work with it, but it does seem a bit unwieldy.

That looks really cool! I like how the highway leads the eyes.

Pretty cool, the B&W suits my tastes, good tones. Yeah, that tree looks really cool, would've like to have seen more of it. 2 thumbs up!
