Re: He dreamed of bigger water. . .

I like it alot. I love betas. I think the only thing, I can say I would do different is I would like to see the bottom of the glass. Other then that, you have a great picture and the title fits perfectly.

We had a beta named Dude(husband named him ) and he had a 10 gallon tank all to himself........well, he did have a plecostamus buddy named Albert.

Re: He dreamed of bigger water. . .

CL - Hey, this is a good idea and a nice title too. But I think the execution (err... photographing) of it could have been a little better. The pic is a little soft and the composition is sort of chopped (that could have been neat in itself, but for whatever reason, I don't think it's working here). Also a tad dark, and the background blue thingie is distracting.

Tell the fish you want a reshoot

I was torn on which view to present first, but of course I have both. Is this more of what you were thinking of? I can't really decide which I prefer.

They are great little fish. This is Roadrunner ( the kids named him that!) and his tank isn't really a wine glass. I was changing his water and figured I would grab a couple of fun pictures while I was waiting for his water to Ph adjust.

Thanks for your analysis GB. I always appreciate your view point and advice.

The softness is due to my screw on magnifier filter (+1). The focus point actually caught him behind the head about half way along his back. See? Nice sharp scale texture. I know his face needs more focus, I will shoot for that next time. The darkness and blue thing were because I set this up on the kitchen stove and just grabbed a piece of material to cover the area so you wouldn't see STOVE. I thought the blue might hint at his dream of water but I can see how that idea might get lost in the scene. A re-shoot is in order for sure to nail the details and use a CLEAN glass but I was struck by the concept and wanted to see if it swam or sank with anyone else.

I prefer the overall composition of the first. It's so very different than what most of us would do. That said, I really love the cloth in the second and how the blue is reflected on his fins. So, I guess I'm as torn as you are.

Ok. It's a nice experiment. I know that getting shots like this is difficult enough with the fish moving. I've heard that those magnification filters soften up a photo. I like the second shot a lot, part of it being the wine glass' shape. I don't know about the centering of it, but it seems to work... And the blue works well in this shot (sure beats the stove).

I dont know how but maybe a flash would help here too? You just have to worry about it reflecting off of the glass.

I think that the lighting is quite fantastic in the three of them! These are so moody.

As far as composition goes on the first and third are by far my favorites (there is nothing wrong with the second one but that picture isn't as distinctive as the others). I totally agree with Chow that including the feet of the glass (in your original composition) would have been great.

I am not that bothered by the blue pattern in the background. I'd simply burn it a little so it remain visible but it blends more in the background.

I do wish the pictures were sharper like everyone else.

    regards

    Seb

Thanks for stopping by to comment everybody. Just two more, this time in his tank. I will definitely be re-shooting this concept with attention to detail instead of as a distraction while I wait for his water to stabilize. Clearly there is potential in this subject. When I do I will apply all the suggestions I have been given here. Thanks!

I really like the third one, with less of the blue at the bottom yet reflecting on th glass. And yes, a cleaner glass would be nice, but you could probably fix a lot of that in PS... Great idea. Good luck with your next attempt!

Use a crystal glass ;) (I'm sure the fish will enjoy that too)
