    Have to start someplace...

Purchased a used digital XTi with the kit lense two days ago. Also had a cheap 75-300mm. Been walking around the yard, shooting and trying to learn. Thought I would post a couple and take my knocks in the interest of education. - TF

    Hi OldClicker,

#1. The house finch looks too small for me. The photo would be much better if the bird filled the frame more and its neck weren’t as tilted.

#2. Try cropping so only the finch and the leaves to the right are visible, along with a bit of background.

    #3.The background is nicely blurred.

    Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, you could have posted all of the photo's together as a series, that way people are able to make a comparison, even though they are different.

Overall though, not to bad. Remember your background as this is just as important as the subject.

He is a tad small, but I wouldn't blow him up that much. Plus, he simply did not come out sharp enough to allow you to blow it up this much. Watch that shutter speed and where the camera is focusing there.. It needs to be sharper. The red and green colors really complement each other nicely here, and the lighting is dramatic.

Welcome to the forum. Hope to see more shots like this!

Great start OldClicker, I like the composition good crop balance, agree with the sharpness, I struggle with that as well sometimes. Keep them coming.
