    Hats!!!

How do you get the shadow out from under peoples hats when taking a photo? I was thinking fill flash but then it would wash out the fore ground. Should I have asked him to park in the shade?

    How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?

Difficult one this and always a problem on bright days - and, yes, the ideal is to get them in the shade if you can. It's not always possible though in which case I tend to lighten the shadows a little (Elements allows this to be done selectively to a degree without affecting the highlights.) I had a little play with the close up version and in this case, I think the shadowing is just part of the picture.

A flash fill would have helped. Also if you shot in RAW fomat you could make adjustments that would help. But I really won't even hardly shoot on days like this unless I just have to.

Boy, I know what you mean. Shooting baseball for two years, 'cap shadows' really were a problem. Fill flash works to some degree, and so does the burn tool.

    Re: Hats!!!

Always use open shade when shooting in sunshine. Also, using a flash is all about balancing the light output of the flash with the intensity of the sun, hence the name "fill flash", so you don't have to worry about washing out the foreground. Last point, you can dodge the face a bit in Photoshop, but that's time consuming and if you don't do it right, the face looks terrible.

When you have to shoot in bright sun it also helps to have the sun behind the subject and then spot meter on his face. Or so I've been told.

I've seen reflector screens used for this purpose. A piece of stiff foam core held by an assistant or on a stand.
