    From the gutter

Downtown Bangkok very early one morning as locals were beginning to rise and visitors were retreating back to their lodgings. I quite like the fact that the image is not all that sharp, the posture of the subject isn't ideal, any comments?

    Thanks

Herriot, I get the feeling you hadn't had your first cup of coffee yet. Speaking strictly for myself, I'm not crazy about the focus. I think it's a good subject for b & w, though.

It has some interesting characteristics about it, but I wish I knew what she was looking at/talking to. I sort of agree with John about the focus .. it's a bit of a distraction to me. I *do* like how the bottom right is blurred, but I wish that she and the rest of the more distant parts of the photo were sharper. Check out the below retouch. I tried sharpening her up a bit, but I think it takes someone better at this stuff than I.

    Re: From the gutter

    Hi,

Thanks both for your comments, this was taken with a wide angle lens with the camera placed at my hip (shooting from the hip) I am not sure what I think of it but wanted to share, the retouch certainly helps, I might continue to have a play with this...

    Many thanks

    Hello Herriot,

I think this is a very interesting shot. I like how the frame is tilted with the girl. It gives me the feeling that she is putting a lot of effort into something...like she's speaking loudly or she's about to throw something. It makes me curious.

    Good shot.

    Re: From the gutter

I wish it was either more blurry, to add a sense of motion, or that at least something was sharp, to make it easier on the eyes. As it stand now, the sharpness is a big drawback I think.

But, the subject of the story itself really leads me to want more. As a slice of life this shot implies a lot, but says very little. Why is she motioning out of frame? Who/what is she talking to/at? What does the gutter have to do with the content of the image? These are the questions I ask when I look at this. It's like the beginning of a story, now I want the middle and end.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.
