Grandpa.

A spontaneous photo that comes off almost as planned. This is my grandfather. It is an incredibly true photograph. I think this is the first black and white portrait that I am really proud of. Thoughts?

So, I see here some harmony between his face, smile, b&w palette and dynamic form of the background. (Maybe too much sunlight on the right side of the image - white spot on the cheek). Nice shot!

Thanks :] Yeah, I do agree with the too much sun on the right cheek...the picture was just too good to me to toss because of that. Any idea how to level that down? I'm not too knowledgeable on spot editing.

This pic. of your Grandpa has tons of character, it has a good mix of tones,the composition is quite good as I see it.The hot spot on the right side is a bit troublesome, can be worked.

I don't prefer the retouch on final material - because I think that the reporting value of the photo is standing higher than its looks. In this case probably an appropriate filter would help or an exposure compensation in parameters of the camera. However my technical competence very much is limited, therefore I am recommending you advice of better photographers.

I agree about the hot spot... though I don't find it too much of detraction. There's a ton of character in this portrait!

O.k. Here is my edit idea.Thanks for your permission.Simple, primitive clone tool work,contrast,minor levels edits.Nothing fancy... but effective? Thanks for sharing this.

I personally like the original better, however I probably couldn't do a better edit. I like the color in the first one better. And in the edit the hot spot on the cheek now looks blurry. A tough edit without having the raw image if one existed!!
