    Grandfather's Barn

Please tell me what you think of this shot. What could I have done to make it better? Thanks.

The sky grabs my eye, and too hard. It's awfully . . . vivid!

Maybe a little less saturation? Maybe color balance away from cyan?

To exaggerate just a bit, it feels like one of those "how we did it" features on a DVD, where they show a set with blue-screen background. That sounds mean, and I didn't intend it to be, and like I said, it's a bit of exaggeration, just to point out how overwhelming the sky color is.

I like your focus comment. You meant the barn and not the tree to be in focus????

I like it. I do think you could adjust the WB slightly or adjust the blues just a touch. I like how you framed it under the tree and the angle is nice as well. You might even try layering the shot and just desaturate the sky just slightly. Maybe too one step to the right and get the left side of the barn completely in the shot. All in all i think you have a very nice shot for the lighting conditions you were dealing with.

Is this better as far as the sky goes? I removed some of the blue.

I think it's fine. The tree almost seems to be protecting the barn. I would leave it as is.

    Re: Grandfather's Barn

Danny, I like the composition, but I think it would be better without so much color. I say this because you have a great, old wreck of a barn that is showing it's age, but it is sporting a modern steel roof with a color that doesn't fit the comp. I don't think it will work well in B/W, but would think that converting it to a sepia, or an antique preset in LR, coupled with some added grain and maybe a little vignette, you might convince me it is an old rusty roof and it may improve the overall picture.

it actually is a old rusty roof so i guess i seriously need to back some color out. Shot this in vivid mode on the fly today at lunch. may just go back and try again tom. thanks for all the input!!!!

    Re: Grandfather's Barn

Have to agree with Ken here, sepia, a bit of grain, a white border with a drop shadow is what I like to see.
    Composition a good though.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

I think it is an improvement Danny...I like it just the way it is now in your finished shot. The colors are more relaxed and natural.

The separation between the tree and barn helps too.

    Re: Grandfather's Barn

I like this photo alot, Danny. I like this old barn and its state of weathered decay. Your framing it in under the trees branch is very effective.
I was going to comment originally about wishing there were some seperation of the barn and the tree and there you have done it in the second take. Very nice.
Is there any room left in your crop of this last photo? I would like to see the crop a bit more like your first take with more tree visible and having it closer to the bottom of the frame. Also would like a bit more room to the right of the barn.
Beautiful subject and framed very well.

    Re: Grandfather's Barn

Interesting shot, but that blue of the sky seems oversaturated to me. Also, the focus is off in the distance on the right, so maybe the hyperfocal wasn't quite spot on? Nice rustic autmnal feel to it tho.

Are you just commenting on the first post without having looked at the rest of the thread? That would make you a tad late to the party . . . . See post #12
