interesting picture... where you spanning him or did you just have a slower shutter speed? Also the pictures a little pixalted, what settings did you use (and what type of film?)?

the movement is pretty cool and the expression is great, i only wish that the picture had more detail and less noise.

I don't know what you did, but I like it. Looks like a painting from a childrens book. scince it seems you are taking some artistic liberties, I would clean up the spots over his lip a bit.

I like the blur in some ways, it seems to give the creature motion, and makes it appear like it is about to jump out at the viewer. You can certainly see it is somewhat agitated. Too bad the BG isn't a little more "jungle"

    Re: Gorilla

Jessica, Mark & payn...thank you all for your comments on this.
Jessica, I was actually taking several shots of this guy, just generally, and his movement managed to blur it up a bit...since I was focussed on his face, it still stayed somewhat in focus. This was with a digital Canon Rebel XT, with the Quantaray 70-300mm lens. I used that for the whole zoo trip.

Mark, I actually haven't changed much from the original on this...I cropped it in a smidge, and added a little contrast and sharpening. I hadn't noticed the stuff on his lip though until you mentioned it, so thank you for seeing that!

Payn, yeah, this guy, to me, looks like the stereotypical gorilla that would be in a scary movie...lol. He seemed to be bullying the other gorilla that was in with him.
It would be VERY cool if the background was more jungle-ish...heh.

Very effective with just the head still. Good work.

Well, actually you can't control the BG in this environment. I replied to this because there seems to be a lack of realizing one's situation (especially when it is obvious) on this board. Not that the situation is an excuse, but perhaps sometimes we got the best shot available in the situation. I'll get off the soapbox now. I'm enjoying the zoo shots too, you almost made me go there yesterday

    No problem, Payn...

I do know what you mean about comments and such re: things that can't really be controlled. I don't mind though as far as, a "wouldn't it be cool"-type remark, or the like.
Thanks on the zoo shots...you should go if you have the chance! I enjoyed your wildlife pictures you posted as well.

    Re: Gorilla

I think he's a cutie and I really like the movement. I thought you had done that to the background and thought I'd let you know that I liked it.

And I agree: Suggestions about what would have made it an even better shot are always useful. Our zoo is two hours away, and when I get a shot there, it may well be high noon with garish sunlight. But you have no way of knowing that so you might suggest I go back and try a different angle or time of day, and it's simply not that feasible. BUT...I'll definitely chalk it up and remember it for next time!
