    Re: Good day of surf

Second one because of the cropped sky which was too big for my screen to see the full photo.
I might change my mind if I was looking at prints.

Excellant shot, xsport. Very complete technically, no flaws. Would have been nice if there was a sun setting in the back, but you cant have everything.

Very nice image, I like the subtle reflection of the surfer. I prefer the first image because I like what the extra height adds, but either way you’d be fine.

    Re: Good day of surf

Of these two the first is more eyecatching as the foam is whiter and better defined. Whether this is from contrast, levels or sharpening is not important but that and the contrast it provides in the image give it more visual impact.

Generally speaking this is a fairly well composed photo, but it really would have benefited from a much greater depth of field. There is perhaps a bit too much sky at the top of each photo for the best overall visual balance and resulting element placement of the surfer, the sky, the water & the horizon. As it stands, the kind and range of blur result in these just coming off as slightly more than blurry beach photos for me.

Hope this addresses what you wanted.

The first one has better contrast while the second has a nicer crop reduction on the sky. A combo of those two factors would be very good. Great shot though, I like the composition and the image a lot.

    Re: Good day of surf

I think either way you've got a great capture here... but the one that draws my eys ito the image is the second one.

Here's my reason: The sky, although interesting, draws my eye away form teh surfer and makes me feel a bit dizzy...vertigo if you will. The second one with the tighter crop eliminates that feeling and makes the image much more pleasing... it also feels like the surfer is slighty more in focus (I know it isn't .. but it give you that feel).

Nice work all around. You've been on my desktop now for months with some of youe pictures and my wife keeps asking when I am gonna be good enough to take pictures like you now lol.

    Re: Good day of surf

Its the portrait for me as it makes the surfer look small in the context of the ocean ... and gives him room to live if that makes sense.

The squat one makes the photo look too compressed.

    Re: Good day of surf

NIc pics, both have their own merit, the first one seems to give the feeling of the whole scene, from a surfers standpoint I can really feel the whole scene, the wave breaking the clear sky the cold wind, the surfer heading back out for another wave.
The second image is much more personal about the surfer, the focus is on him and I get the feeling he just got a good one and is taking it all in while heading back for another wall.

I specialize in surf photography and must ell you I love these images, if you have a site let me know.
Also feel free to check my photos out and let me know what you think.
