Welcome aboard. I like the angle here. Some would argue that you want living things at eye level most of the time, but the wide-angle perspective and dog looking up and kind of "smiling" works, too. I think the shadow detracts from an otherwise clean and simple photo. Also, it could use more light in the eye at camera right.
Interesting shot Ben. Shooting a subject that's alive without your control and in sunlight is tough. Lava lamp made the great point about the eye on the right hand side being too dark I'd have to agree. The nose is a little soft in focussing, but the eyes are sharp so I think that makes up for it. Chunk's idea is good too, just cropping off so the head is more prominent but I think that'll come down to personal choice.
Welcome Ben. Though no pet expert, I like this cropped just above the head.
I agree with Chunk. I also think it is nice that you have a consistant background that contrast the dogs texture. Nothing is interfering with the two. Nice shot.
Woof! Dog shot, I'm prejudiced Could use a little more detail/contrast in the black of his nose. Also, more or less dog. Not the best use of framing, though to get one of these guys to pause for moment can be a herculean challenge. I've wiped a lot of drool off lenses over the years!

Good shot,
Jared
The eyes really are not sharp and the angle distorts the height of the dog and shape. An on camera flash used in fill mode and carefully adjusted would delineate the eyes much better too. Let a dog play with a toy for example and then shoot at it's level. I will be looking after my daughter's cats in a couple of weeks and there will be a possibility of some interesting "natural" shots since I have a big Airedale dog.
