    Go Irish

This was taken during the annual St. Patrick's Day parade here in Kalamazoo yesterday. Unfortunately, I couldn't crop out the person on the left without cutting out a good portion of the front of the bus. I'm using the trial of Nikon Capture software that came with the D70, so I'm not used to working with curves. I apologize in advance if the colors aren't what they should be.

    John,

An interesting picture to say the least! It is very busy, as I'm sure you know, but I'm guessing you did the best you could given the circumstances. I personally think this might look better in black and white, though it might take some adjusting!

    Interesting shot,

    Jared

I don't dispute that it's busy. There's a lot of background there, but it was a parade, so I only took my kit lens. The temperature was 33 degrees, and I didn't anticipate staying that long. We ended up staying for nearly all of it, and on a warmer day, I might have taken the zoom along too.

John, I like the colors and the subject here. If the person were not standing in front, and if you opened the crop up a bit to include all of the front wheel and some more of the front of bus, it would have been much stronger. I have noticed with alot of your pictures you have a tendency to crop in very tightly, and i think loosening of the framing some would help, imo. these situations, shooting in public, parades, carnivals etc. pose additional challenges sometimes beyond our control. Good of you to get the shot in the first place.

That's a major flaw I have. When I compose, I have a tendancy to forget to include things at the bottom of shots------like feet. As for this shot of the bus (and Jared made the same point) it was too busy. Plus I shot in SP in all these parade pictures. I noticed when viewing them right away that AP would have made a huge difference in a lot of them. This particular shot could have been so much better, and I realized that after seeing what he saw. Patience is not one of my strongest virtues, and it's a constant battle to keep myself in check and slow down to get the best possible shot. This was my first parade (a weak excuse ) but I learned a lot from the experience, and will be prepared for the next one.
