    Giambi Congratulates Jeter

I took my new E-520 and 70-300mm lens to Yankee Stadium yesterday. The camera is a replacement for my E-510. I'm not sure how I like it yet and using such a long lens presents its own challenges. More on that later as I gain more experience.

What do you think of this shot. I adjusted the exposure, contrast and sharpness, and cropped the photo all online using Picknik. Not my usual way to edit but I think this came out pretty good.

    What do you think?

No opinions on this photo? I guess that means it's pretty mediocre. This is a pretty aggressive crop and I used "online" software to process it.

It is also a fairly historic moment. Derek Jeter has just hit a home run that tied him with Lou Gehrig for the most hits by a Yankee at Yankee Stadium. He went on to break the record last night - a record that can never be broken.

Hi there .. being a Brit I know next to nothing about baseball, and have never heard of the gentlemen concerned. But, that aside, I think you probably did a pretty decent job here, considering you must have been some considerable distance away. Your crop is pretty effective - I like leaving the plate in to give it context. Judging from the texture of the grass at the bottom though, it looks a bit over sharpened to me. Exposure and contrast is pretty good though for what looks like a bright day.

    Cheers

Thanks very much for your comments. I was probably too heavy handed with the processing. The crop is an odd shape, not really suitable for printing, but yes, I purposely cropped it so the plate would be in the picture, but eliminated the catcher and the umpire. It might work with the catcher still in the picture but the umpire seemed distracting to me.

Here's the same crop but with much less processing. I tweaked the color a bit but didn't change the contrast, brightness or sharpness. I suppose the perfect exposure lies somewhere between the two.

I agree with Mike the placemant of the plate and the player gives it a very nice since of depth and that he must have hit it out. Nice work.

I tried cropping this for an 8 x 10 print but I don't think it works quite as well.

Well I like that one too. The wider shot works also.

I think the catcher adds something to the shot. Without him, it all seems just a bit too perfect. The image with less processing is better also. As for the subject matter, I am happy that you have something to cheer for. I don't even want to discuss the poor excuse of a baseball team in this town.

Nice shot with such harsh lighting conditions. Good luck with the new camera.

    Thanks for your comments.

Unfortunately, there isn't much to cheer about in regard to baseball in New York either, at least for Yankee fans. For that one day they played well so at least I had fun at the game, but it's been a horrible season for the Yankees. It looks like their $200 million+ payroll is going to finish in 3rd place.

Of course if you're a Mets fan you have something to cheer about, at least until the blow the playoffs like they did last year.

ericzen......as a fellow Yankee fan, I hear ya!
BTW, I live in Jeter's hometown......Kalamazoo. Needless to say, he's quite popular here.
I like the shot with Navarro in it the best. CF nails it.....adding the catcher gives the shot context.

It's a good shot, but what's missing to me is emotion and context. If you hadn't told us what had just happened, I could have easily assumed Jeter had just struck out and Giambi was giving him a "better luck next time" high-five.

Good point. I guess it's kind of hard to capture emotion from the upper deck. I'll look through my other shots to see if I can find one that captures more emotion.

Then again, maybe that is the emotion. As great an accomplishment this is for Jeter, he is not making the playoffs for the first time in his career. He may be very disappointed despite this personal milestone.
