i must be the strange one, i'm not a fan of the background. i think all the lines are distracting, they take the eye away from the subject.
still beautiful flowers and bird
I think it's a winner CF. I know you were, to a degree, "lucky" in that this little fellow just came along and posed. But, even so, you have it pretty nailed I think. I especially like the fact that there are no branches of the shrub obscuring or behind his body.
A good capture CF. Looks like you have a great Hummer garden. The fence doesn't bother me but the harsh lighting is a draw back IMO. Bright sunshine means strong shadows. For future pics of little hummers in strong sunlight use your pop-up, on camera flash as a fill light to bring out details around the eyes and under their bellies.
Thanks very much for the comments. Nice to get some feedback, I appreciate it very much.
CLK- I will keep your ideas in mind for my next grand hummer adventure. In this instance, however, I was approx. 10 yards away so I don't know if my flash would have helped. This was really a dumb luck shot.
A very nice subject! "Lucky" is a term to describe this moment.
Very beautiful setting. The wood is a nice color, the knot in the fence really pulls you in.
I have read all the tips suggested, a fill flash really does work in certain situations.
very nice shot!...I held a envelope up and cropped about a half inch off the top and the bird seemed to pop a little more to me...of course I am of that .."everyone has a opinion " variety
Thanks very much for the comments. I will keep the fill flash in mind. I didn't use it as I thought I was too far away. The crop is a great suggestion. I tried it also and agree, it makes a difference. Thanks again.
Nice capture CF !
Hummers make great subjects, but yah gotta be quick.
The fence background adds to the photo, especially the 'halo' knot ( imho ).
Looks like you did everything right !

I like nearly everything about this shot, but agree with CL about using fill in flash. Try dodging the bird a fraction to get a bit more detail.
I love your fence

Thanks for the comments on this shot also. I will try the fill flash suggestions over the coming weekend when I park it in the back yard to enjoy the birds. Thanks again.
