I love the horizontal shot Alison, the composition is much more pleasing, and the child looks more natural.

So, when you gonna give that class on portraits? Sign me up! :)

Top shot's twist is cute. But the bottom shot's DOF and sharpness is the best. I think I wuld have given it a tad more DOF to get the shoulders and arms even more in focus, but the out-of-focus colors behind her,... They're just great.

    Thank you GB.

And there was me thinking everyone was going to say that the pink flowers behind her was just too much with her outfit.

I'm pleased you both like it :D

Not at all too much, IMO. I printed some photos yesterday from a local studio photographer (yes he uses Wal-Mart, and yes his clients are very happy, lol) ANYWAY, his shots were of a lil bit younger girl, she was crawling in the grass, and he had spread pink rose petals aroun her (she was wearing pink also), and with the green I was blown away. Much as I am by many of your portraits.

I prefer the 2nd. shot as well. The top one looks a bit out of focus and it is hard on my eyes.

Thanks Katt. The top shot was given a soft focus.

The eye sockets and area around the eyes need a little brightening and the colour balance seems to lean a little toward magenta, perhaps due to an enhancement filter or Photoshop?

Maybe just sharpen the eyes a bit and then it won't seem so out-of-focus (well, at least to me)

Oh... the color scheme works well 'cause with the background matching her dress so much it doesn't compete (which with that color it could easily) and her face becomes more noticable.
