2nd one is the better of the two.

the 1st one is washed out. a bit of a grey gradiant at the bottom also, which i don't understand.

the 2nd one the face is well lit, nice composition and setting.

    Hi from another Brit!

No 2 is definitely the one. The first is little more than a snapshot I think, but the second is interesting, compositionally and in content. The shades and the headphones add a lot of personality to your subject. Is that Brighton?

I wish he was turned towards you in #2, or on the other side at that angle. For #1...watch your background. A pier makes a nice background, a compact car not so much.
    mostly Nikon gear

Feel free to edit my images for critique, just let me know what you did.

Thanks for the comment. The grey section of the #1 is the glare from the sun. The sun was directly behind him, I have had that a couple of times using that Lens, might be something to do with the lens hood.

Thanks for the feedback. I was trying to get the background to blur a bit more but didn't quite succeed

    Re: Friend

Reflected sun light makes for way nicer portraits

#1 I guess it is wide open against the sun , complicated combination , often results in the lack of contrast seen in that photo

#2 much better, but in direct sun light, notice how even with sunglasses he is squinting
