    Freezing Fog

Photo was taken in early morning at Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. On a mother/daughter trip - we were graced with a beautifu freezing fog transforming the valley.

I only had a 3x optical zoom on my Nikon Coolpix 7600, so could not "get closer" to the buck. I did nothing with the light, but would appreciate advice on ISO? or other settings for this type of light - sunrise, fog, ice... I have a new camera (Kodak Z12 IS) that should allow me to control more of those setting.

    Great site, thanks!

looks good but would of been bettter to be closer to the deer but you can only get so close right!

i find the sky where its bright distracts me from the deer but over all i like the foggyness and the deer in the frosty looking field!

I think I would crop it below the bright spot and clone the dark area at the lower right. To bad you wasn't a little closer, still a good shot.

    Re: Freezing Fog

I LOVE the quality of the light in the first and second rows of trees. I like this shot wide like this to feel the mood of the environment. But I agree with the others about the distracting open areas in the clouds and the (car?) in the bottom right corner.

A 1:2 ratio crop will take out both distracting elements nicely while maintaining the feel.

I would have preferred a shot where the animal is not looking at you. Perhaps you have another shot - a profile of the head perhaps?

    Nice find!

    Re: Freezing Fog

You really captured the foggy freeze and the scene with the Buck is a good one. Yes, crop just to the bottom edge of the blown out sky and eliminate the dark spot in the right lower corner. There was nothing you could do about that blown out light in the sky other than to not include it in the frame.
    Good.
