    Framed

Are these worth keeping? Please critique. The first is the original - the other 2 crops.

Wow! What an interesting and unique subject Liz. I love the shots, definately interesting, though I can see how hard it would be to arrange a definite subject. I'm not sure which is my favourite, but I definately love the subject.

    Well done,

    Jared

    Re: Framed

Hmmmm. I just replied to this post and it got lost in space! Here goes No. 2.

Thanks Jared. I appreciate the comments. Actually these were in a display window at Saks Fifth Avenue - they sometimes have quite interesting displays, some worthy of shooting.

It's great to see you around Jared. I missed you.

Liz! What a great subject! I love it. The first one is my favorite. The chaos of the frames and the guy in the picture peering out is priceless. Whoever put that display together knew what they were doing.

My only nitpick is the manequin's arm on the left. I either want to see the rest of the manequin - because I feel she tells another story - or I want it cropped out so it doesn't hiny at anything else going on over there. Make sense?

You're doing wonderful photography Liz! I love your street work!

    Liz,

Definately great to be back. I haven't been able to post many images, but I still love critiquing.

Can't wait till April, I'm going on a photography trip/field placement for school so I'll have a whole slew come April!

    Thanks,

    Jared

Thanks Rick. I agree 100% about the manequin. However, I couldn't get her cropped out without taking away from the rest of the image - changing the dynamic altogether. I only have PSElements so I don't have the options that PS gives you.

    Thanks for the nice comments.

Liz, I have PSE also I haven't found it limiting yet, but I don't do all the crazy things other photographers do with it either!

Put me down for number one. The mannequin doesn't bother me because her presence s subtle enough I think. But what a great capture.

    Re: Framed

Your two crops answered my main critique, that a tighter shot would have been better. I was wrong - I think. Maybe a tighter shot from another angle? I can see you were shooting through a window. Might have been worth asking if you could get inside to shoot. That kind of request can make you uncomfortable. But I get less and less shy about that kind of thing. The more you ask, the less awkward it feels.

I like your original image. After looks at the crops, I think the random jumble of frames with a sort of random bunch of stuff around them, feels, well - random. And that's good. I don't know if this ends up being a great photo. But it's definitely interesting and I think it's a solid good. And I like that it feels like something new for you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're going out on a creative limb here. And I think it's working. It also looks like a good direction for you to follow.

    Thanks for the critique, John.

Because of the reflections of the window I was trying to shoot through, I couldn't find another angle at the moment. I was a bit impatient though because people were walking in front of me constantly - and the more polite were waiting to walk in front of me. I'm getting bolder about asking people if I can take their picture, but it's still very difficult for me. Asking Saks if I can go into their front window to take some pictures with the NYC crowd right outside is beyond what I am capable of doing on this earth!

I agree 100% with all of the above. Thanks John, I appreciate the comments.....and will take your advice.

    Re: Framed

The mannequin makes the photo! Don't crop it out and I don't want to see the face.

There is just enough there to know it's a mannequin invites the question, "Who is being framed?"

Did the mannequin make the mess? I like not knowing the expression of the face 'cause I imagine a smug smirk. If the face was in the picture it would have to be one of pure innocence, like "How could I have done that!? I'm just a mannequin!"

Was the mannequin placed there to take the blame for someone elses mess? I imagine a look on her face of "I didn't do it! How could I have done it!?"

The painting of the man says he know's the truth, yet the expression on his face is "I'll never tell!".

    Another piece that invokes!

    Good work.

Yeah. Saks might not be so cooperative, either. I would have done exactly what you did.

    Re: Framed

I really like the second shot Liz. That bizzaro jumble of frames kept me coming back and trying to imagine why that would happen. Later postings in the thread finally clued me in that it was a display window.

I like both these shots and your other of the terminal case of cat's cradle. You are shooting more abstract lately it seems to me. That's a fun way to go.

Now that is an interesting thought. Guess it depends on the frame - or lack of one.
    Thanks for the comments.

    Re: Framed

    Liz,

I think everyone else has said it all. Excellent, The funny thing is I like all of the above.

The way I look at it is if you don't ask you don't get. When asking just be polite and explain what you will be doing with the photo once taken, e.g. just as hobby, to sell... If you intend to sell then offer to add their copyright as well as yours to the photo and always offer to send them a 6x4.

They can give you one of 2 answers yes or no - whats the harm?
