I like the food as art idea, and the DOF is the right thing to do as well. The color pallettes of the things behind are nice and fit the theme. But the lighting is kind of harsh and not helping. I would prefer to see some darkening toward the back. It would, of course be trivial to do this if you have the Raw.

Great idea. I think I would like to see more colorful food though and maybe (especially in the first) a little more depth of field and less blur on the food in the background. You also may want to consider showing more of the actual pallet the food is resting on to establish your theme. Also as Daq has mentioned, I myself am learning the importance of use of light as well as exposure and composition which will vary according to your subject and desired effect and can also be addressed post processing.

Creative idea! I also would like to see a more colorful palette. Love your dof except it's a bit too much for me in the first one. Number 3 is the best because of your placement of the palette and the spillover is interesting. The red, orange, yellow and green on this set up instead of the more neutral colors (especially the dark rear color that mocks the hole in the palette) would be great. A more "wet" food like pimento or green pepper might make it interesting as well. Good job!
