    Folklorico

Took this at a quinceanera (15th birthday) in September. The birthday girl belongs to a Mexican Folklorico dance troupe, which were invited to perform during the reception.
This is a shot of one of the dancers.

Taken on Fuji superia 200, with the n80 and 28-105 lens...
converted to b/w in photoshop and added some motion blur to compensate for two blown out windows behind the dancer,
    also included the color version.

    Any thoughts?

    Rebekah,
this is some of the best work I've seen from you. Great composition. The action pose captured, and the inclusion of the bit of leg at the bottom is perfect. The bg looks excellent as well and adds a sort of artistic looking soft but moody setting. When first looking I was convinced i preferred the colored version, but after looking some more I like both.
btw, if you get the chance, try the Fuji Xtra 400 film. It has the 400 speed and very fine grain, for that speed. And the colors really pop.
    Great work.

    Really good capture and unusual.
However it looks odd to me. With the huge radius of her flowing skirt her body looks so tiny as it appears from the top of the skirt.
Also I would like to see more of her arm above her head. Not too sure where her left arm is gone.

These are both astoundingly beautiful! I'm torn between them, too. On the BW image, the joy in her face is so evident. On the color image, the vibrancy of her skirt brings home the energy in her dance.

I do feel a pang at not seeing her hands or her feet, since both are usually so expressive in the dance, but I can't say that missing either of them lessens the impact in the least!

I couldnt agree with you more, as a dance instructor (my day job) we stress on hands, and feet... but however in this shot, her hand was engulfed in her skirt as she was holding the skirt, causing the twirl up behind her body.

I have a few more from this event, I'll look through and see if I have any others to post... however, as far as dance and emotion are concerned this was the best of the bunch from that day.

Tom, thank you for yout comments. I agree, I'd love to have more arm and leg in the shot.
She does look a bit odd because of the enormity of her skirt, I also think the background plays that up a bit. The original background includes balloons and two heavily blown out windows, which I found distracting.

A daringly tight crop that, in my estimation, succeeds in showing all the necessary elements. Both versions have heir own appeal for me (yes, even the color one...) and each interprets slightly differently - with the B&W showing more of the form and style, the color showing the vibrancy of Latin dance. Great work, Rebekah.

    Re: Folklorico

    Rebekah,

Both of these are lovely and the composition is spot on. I would never have thought of croping the photo like this. It really works.

The colour version is so vibrant even with the burn out on the white blouse which seems to glow, I would consider burning this just slightly. The expression on the dancers face is excellent and you have just enough arm and leg to make it work. One comment is where is the other arm, the blouse seems to just merge into the dress.

The B&W seems to keep the same tonal radiance and its intriguing because I rarely come across a photo which is both good in B&W and colour but this photo succeedes. I still would consider burning the blouse in a tad on the B&W but it would depend on the look you end up wth on both as to whether it would work or not.

    Rebekah,

I don't have much to add here. Simply put, I must say that this is an outstanding and incredibly lively photograph. I see motion and I hear music. What else can I say?

Becky, not sure what else to add here. Both shots for me are stunning. You are right in that the b/w shows the joy in her face while the color shot shows it through the colorful skirt. I actually like the tight crop/shot. ;) I think it actually adds to the image.
