    Flux and Filings

This is what I'm currently experimenting with. I have a powerful electromagnet and some iron filings. When I turn the power on the filings try to align with the lines of magnetic flux and produce some bizarre shapes. I plan to experiment with light and angles, its good fun but the magnetic field is so strong it affects stuff well over a meter from the coils ( 250 amp current draw ) and I'm a bit reluctant to get my camera too close as I don't know what effect the field could have on the electronics . This was taken using my 55-250 hence the very shallow DOF. All suggestions cheerfully explored...

Cool idea. I would try focus stacking for much more dof so whole structures can be sharp.

It's funny, I was just reading about focus stacking, and thought this would be a great reason to use it. However, I do like the effects of the shallow DOF, just need to exploit that somehow. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Good subject to create an out off this world image

how far is your camera from the strong electromagnet? I'm not sure i would want my camera exposed to a strong magnetic field for a long time ... maybe I'm paranoid

Good luck with your experimentation. Also,I agree with Armando about the strong magnetic fields you're creating. Hopefully nothing is ruiined.
