    Flower

Okay, I'm just starting out in photography and looking for as much feedback as i can!

This picture I took in Curacao and just thought it would be a cool picture, I think it turned out pretty well.

As I am pretty new to photography Im not that advanced with all the lingo, so if you could break it down into pretty simple english it would be much appreciated!

Here is the original and a modified version..any tips and/or advice is always welcome

    Re: Flower

I really like the definition and colour in the flower and the leaves, however the background lets it down. I would blur the background in PP to help this along and or straighten the verticals.

    Re: Flower

    Nice coloured flower.

I agree that the background could be improved, though perhaps going back and re-shooting with a different background will be easier. To have it as more blurred as possible, here are some tips:

    • Shoot with as wide an aperture as possible. This will read something like F2.8, F3.2, etc.. The smaller the F-number the wider the aperture.
    • Get as close to the subject as possible.
    • Use a longer focal length, for example 55mm at F5.6 will produce a more blurred background than 18mm at F5.6.

Photos can of course be edited afterward on a computer, but it is far easier and less time-consuming to get as much right in-camera on-location. Simply taking one step sideways can make a huge difference. Also try using your camera's LCD screen to review images and composition.

    Re: Flower

    Welcome to the forums.

    The above pointers are excellent.
My problem with this beautiful flower is the composition.
There is a lot of empty space at the bottom and the top runs out of frame.
It springs abrubtly from the left frame.
I think a more interesting composition would have been at an angle from the right, looking more into the flower and wide enough to include the whole flower.
I can't tell but it appears this would have given a better background without that white railing in it.
Flowers only seem simple to shoot.
    Keep Shooting!
