I took this with my teacher's D70 on fully manual settings at my school. I intentionally put the light meter up 1 brightness notch to make the flower stand out more on the background.

Shutter Speed: 1/180
Aperture: F/8

You probably should have shot down at the flower, the bright sky has blown out the details of the flower. You also need to get closer to your subject, but shooting on a cloudy day as you did is good practice when it comes to flowers....

Next time you shoot against the sky, try using the flash with faster shutter speed and smaller aperture (meter against the sky) Maybe the sky wont be so bright and you'll get some detail from the flower. I haven't tried this myself, but I imagine it would help.
