    A Fish in New York

Got 20 minutes in Times Square this week. Walked around with a D50 and 10.5mm fisheye lens around my neck, prefocused, and hit the shutter now and then with my thumb. Here are a few of the ones I liked. Any comments and suggestions appreciated.

I don't care for #1, the fish eye effect isn't enough. But I like the other three. I would love a fisheye for my Olympus but it's around $600.00

They're all pretty neat, though only #2 have a strong subject. I think that the bottom two are technically superior because the top ones seem to be tilting to the left (!?) I wonder if a vert. format would have been a good thing here, too. Try a nice shot on that street with a tripod, getting some light streaks.

It's fun to look at NYC, but not sure I could take all those crowds. But the pretzels sure look good

I love these. I love fisheye lenses and ultrawides. I miss them. I had a 21 mm lens with my old Miranda Sensorex (in the 60s and 70s) and I used to attach a .6x auxillary. Lost sharpness but got really neat effects.

I'd say #2 is definitly the best with strong subject and interesting background.

Thanks. The Nikon is around $600, too, and it probably doesn't offer as much value for the money as many other lenses. I'm having fun with it, though, and trying some stuff that helps me understand wide-angle perspectives better.

Thanks. The crowds were actually the lightest I've seen in a dozen or so visits to NYC, but still more crowded than just about anywhere in the US. I agree on finding a subject on these -- many of the ones I took had a figure I was focusing on, but I found that the camera metered fo so much that the person was usually pretty dark and featureless. I'm starting to thing spot meter only when using this lens.
