    First Hard Frost

Seems I've been away for a lifetime. Not done much photography in months thanks to work.

Well I thought I'd throw this up because I'm not sure if its too busy and needs a different crop. Any thoughts?

I don't think it's too busy, but I like a vertical crop of the leaves.

Cool shot. Looks like an Xmas decoration.

It would probably be perfect if the grass wasn't so think, but even so, not terribly busy or anything. It does lack contrast to an extent, for it seems like the tonality of the leaves and grass are a little too close. Maybe a macro shot of the main leaf would have been pretty neat too.

Thanks for looking and the comments:

I took a protrait and even moved the leaf to a totally different position, which I'll post later, but I never thought of taking a macro, blast

This is a portrait shot I took in colour and converted to B&W; improvement?

    Re: First Hard Frost

I like this version Roger, more balanced to my eye. How did you do the BW conversion? Since the gray tones of the leaves and grass are similar, I'd suggest trying the channel mixing method and lower the greens and raise the reds to get some differentiation. If you do, the smaller orange leaves need to be converted seperately to keep from being brightened to much.

    Chunk,

This photo has caused me so many problems and wasn't really sure about it and still not that sure.

The B&W conversion was carried out using RawShooter Essentials and then used the contrast in PSE 2.0 to bring it up some. Just tried to do the same in PSE from the coloured version and can't get it much better than the one posted.

Just wondering if PS does this better?

    Roger

PS: Here is the different shot I was talking about earlier, where I moved the leaf

Here's what I was talking about using channel mixing in PS. This was quickly done and I'm sure the results could be better using the original file as well.

I like the contrast in textures in this new shot.

    Chunk,

Thanks for showing what you meant, Spent a few minutes in PSP last night trying to mimic what you did, no joy yet. Will hopefully spend a bit more time on it tonight.

What did you think of the picture where I move the leaf?

    Re: First Hard Frost

Roger, your first shot is quite nice, I do like the way Chunks quick edit looks. I also have PSE2 and did not have much luck with hue- saturation. But I did get some interesting resuls with color variations.
The second image is great. Well composed and captured.

    Mark,

    Shouldn't you be asleep?

Thanks for the comments - colour variations? I need to learn a lot more about the tools that I have, care to post an example and how you did this?

    Re: First Hard Frost

Hi Roger, I played with your image for a few hours with pse2 and my results were similar to yours.
The results werent different, but it is a different road. there was no easy way to get a result like that which Chunk posted.
