    First ever.

I took about 200 shots yesterday and this was my favorite of them all. I am new to photography and am still using my D60 on auto mode so I can focus on composition before mucking around with anything else.

Tell me what you like and dislike and what you would do to make it a better shot.

This is a good photo. If I had to suggest something it would be to crop off a little of the foreground so the dirt patch wasn't showing, but its really not a big distraction.

    Nice job.

It looks quite reasonable. Don;t be scared to try different angles, looking up from ground level.

Quite a few people still don't get composition right. Don't stress too much on it, just enjoy your photography

Composition is pretty good, color is fantastic. maybe just a little curves adjustment in photoshop to reveal the detail in the building without blowing out the sky (you did a real good job of keeping the sky intact, which is hard when shooting into the sun)

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. It was a harsh, sunny day. I was lucky there were enough trees to filter out some of the light. I'll definitely be making another trip out during a different part of the day.

Plus, I only explored about half the reserve, so I'm pretty sure there's a lot more subject matter to be found. And here's another shot from the same day.

    Re: First ever.

I like what you did on the first one, you filled the frame very well and I like the angle and how you are using the lines. Would look better closer to dawn or dusk, no harsh shadows and better color temperature. Id say its overexposed a bit too, but nothing you can do about that in auto mode. Would suggest getting into a priority mode as starters opposed to the full auto - its still the easy lazy way, but still gives you better control over the exposure.

On the second shot the subject is a bit ambiguous, and the dof is way too deep. You shot that at 18mm, 1/125th f/5.6... your shutter is fine, but you should shoot this sort of subject at much more telephoto lengths, certainly not the widest angle, 50mm+ being ideal. You should also shoot much more open apertures to isolate your subject and gives it a good creamy soft backdrop, I dont want to see those trees behind the subject.. Looks like it was shot in hot sun, waiting a bit later for softer light can help. Also - make the focus point at the very front tip of the closest part of this subject, it looks like it focused about 3-5 inches too far back.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

I'm thinking this one may have been better with a vertical format as the most interesting part of the image is in the right third. I like the out of focus background here, if you were shooting full automatic on this one the camera did good (if you made the decision, you did good) .
    No, I DON'T need that.
