    First Drift Event- Day set

This is from my first drift event. I have not shot anything like this. Critique and advice appreciated.

I like that pan on #5, keeping it centred on the front wheel and letting the rear wheel blur as it moves towards you is great.

Thanks. This is the first time I tried Panning and shooting something like this. I did a little reading on how to pan before I went.

I agree about #5. It has a very nice focus point and the tire turning gets the drifting point across.

#'s 3 and 5 in this set are excellent. Again as I said in the night portion post... fluid panning comes with practice. The trick with Drifting is to try and show motion AND angle AND smoke. Those are the 3 elements that the judges are looking for as well as the fans. If you can find a location that allows you to show off at least 2 of those 3 elements then you have a winning combination before you start.

Great stuff so far. Keep up the practice and come show it off in the sports forum.

I think 2nd to last one is the best one here. I kinda like the treatment of photos with the noise and the vintage look if that's what you were aiming for. but if you weren't aiming for that, then they are a bit too grainy.

@Jaedon - Thanks. I was being explained the judging system by a friend while I was there. I use to think it was just the lenght of the slide. Now I have a better knowledge of the sport and reading more on Panning tips... Hoping next time is a bit better.

@leels- I shot these with film. Ektar 100 film with a Nikon F4. that might be a bit of the grain. some are shot with a Nikon d70 but I think, in this set, only one or two.

Shooting with film? I thought that went out with the dinosaurs (j/k) lol.

That explains the grainy images. I liked that aspect. Practice with digital to save a TON of money. I still like to drag my old pentax out now and then after shooting with digital all day. Make for a challenge to get the same ideas on film instead of just clicking away.

seriously! lol. I like to shoot film because it helps me. It is my way of showing my self I can trust what I am doing or that I am doing it right. Not just shooting and staring at my screen until I get it right. I shoot a roll or two and then switch to digital. I go back and critique my contact sheet. I try to remember what I did different in every shot or trying to see what is different about every shot. I shoot a few frames in one shutter speed and a few others in another. lol I am still learning but I don't like to edit pictures so, I want to make sure I am right the first time.

Also, I just love the way film looks and I can get a pro grade camera for a lot cheaper. Shot these with a Nikon F4 I got for $150 in outstanding condition. This was shot with regular film because I didn't want to spend a ton on processing slide film, might be why it's grainy.

I did edit #4- it was a way blurry and grainy. I wanted to just go with it more so it fit the picture all the way around.
