Hello! I wanted to take some black and whites with my camera b/c I have never done so. I took this shot sitting on my couch. I like the "mood" of this shot. But even if I think a picture looks okay, someone else can always tell me how a picture can look better.

Thanks for sharing. I like the photo. B&W is perfect for texture. One thing I've read about black and white that I try to remember is to have pure blacks, pure whites, and as many levels of gray in between that I can get. Otherwise, the photo can get a little muddy, like a bad copy machine. I'm not saying yours looks like that -- quite the contrary, it's nice -- but you may want to tweak the contrast and levels in an image editor if you have one.

Thanks for the ideas. I did edit the contrast a bit, but not much. I wonder just how "true" to black and white my camera takes, you know what I mean? Thanks so much for the reply! I think I will work on the levels and contrast a bit and see if I can come up with something better. I have not worked much with levels When I have I just do what I think visually looks good. I am not 100% sure of the technical side of it!

What about this? I brightened up the whites a bit by clicking the whites eyedropper on a highlight I found in the lamp base, and then brought the midlevel greys back down just a smidge in curves.

Wow! That is much better. I have seen that feature before, using the dropper to adjust hightlights but I have never used it. You have truly opened my eyes to more possiblities in editing photos. Your version stands out! Looking at mine now it looks too dark and too grey. Thanks so much for the tips!
