Industrial areas are a wealth of photographic opportunities. I think I see what you see in this place, but I think you fail to present to us what you see in it. The shot is no different than if we were right there simply looking up at it. Maybe wait for better light and emphasize the shadows? Or get closer and show us the details, the rusted out building in the foreground maybe? Lots of stuff here, from studies in contrast and shadows to abstracts. On its own though, tis shot really doesn't do anything for me.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

I agree with much of what Sebastian already stated, but there is something to that first shot (b&w). Yes, it does look like you just stood there, looked up and tried to get whatever you could in the frame as opposed to a well thought out, deliberate composition. But, perhaps this was deliberate. I am drawn to the bland tones, and the "here, take it or leave it" type composition ( if you get what I'm saying) It somehow goes with the old shoddy looking structure. The open space with the darkness awaiting lends to some tension and intrigue,, and the clouds in the back resemble steam or smoke.
i find that i like it as it stands.
The one in color loses all of that i described and relies heavily on the composition, which i feel is not bad, but not very strong. I think your trying to take in too much.
Great subject, lots of potential targets in there from what I can see already.

I'm with the others, I thought you were just getting started with this place.

Re: A favorite subject of mine (coal chute again)

I very much appreciate your comments and honesty, and I intend to try to incorporate these things.

Sebastian, I would LOVE to get in there, but a homeless person and his very angry dog live inside this building and it is surrounded by a fence. I did find a hole in the fence, but then the man jumped out and scared the S&*! outta me. Perhaps one day, I can catch him "out". lol

Gary, I think I see what you mean. A hard thing for me has been trying to follow the rule of thirds, and I attempted to follow it here, but between the subject and perspective issue at that focal length (and angle), it somehow failed.

Roger, I have shot about 50 images here. The building just pulls me to it. This is my "practice" spot for industrial shooting, at least for now. So now and then I post to get some opinions till I get it right.

Again, Thank you all VERY much.

EDIT: Looking back again, I really think the color is what has drawn me into these photos. I tried a new lab (same usual film) and I was amazed by the color. The photos taken at sunset had much better lighting, etc. Another thing I have noticed is that I produce better shots using my digital compact than my film SLR, not that one is better than the other. Perhaps I need to practice much more with the film camera. These are my fav of the place so far...
