    Fashion Show

    Hi All,

I had the pleasure of attending a fashion show for a university near me, one of my friends had some pieces being shown. Anyhow I didnt do very well, over-exposed, under-exposed and blurry shots throughout, live and learn.

I managed to get this one tho, and i really like it so thought I would share.

Well, I know these shots are difficult to take..It was not to long ago that I had similar problems..A fast Prime lens took care of it for me...Looking at the exif data, you would have really benefited from a fast. good low light lens like an F/1.4 or even an f/2.8

What really screwed it for me, was that whoever did the lighting must have been in the A-Team or something, as the lights where the 400W plus security lamps.. and they where at the side of the stage.. and as soon as the models hit the light the skin overexposed, being a novice I didnt know how to compensate correctly. So in the end had to set the light meter to be underexposed and kept the camera pointing at the same area where the models went.. worked ok but not brilliant.

This reminds me of a Degas drawing. I love the highlights on the face. It's not a typical fashion photo but a rendering.

    This is a good point.

My issue with this photo is that it is not very flattering to the model. Just a bit more blur would take care of that.
    No, I DON'T need that.

I don't know, I kind of like the blur on her legs and maybe her arm. But I don't really find the lighting around her face and head that flattering - seems like she's being lit from underneath. That's a lighting technique that movies/photographers usually use to make the character look sinister (you can see examples of this all over the movies...). Not saying that they or anyone intended the lighting to look like that, but somehow it seems like that. Other than that issue, I do find the way she's illuminated against a dark background to be a plus.

I should have got a picture of the lighting, massive secuirty lamps right below the stage pointing upwards.. and I was sitting right next to one at the end of the cat walk.. so it just didnt work out too well for me.

thanks for the comments, there are some more, this one stood out for being unusual.

Degas darwings are often harshly lit from below--to show the effects of harsh stage lights. It's not a flattering photo but very revealing.
