    Fall Foliage...

... in B&W...LOL I was testing out a new light meter yesterday. This was a farting around shot I took but, I kinda like how it came out. Other than "it would be better in color", what do you think?

    Re: Fall Foliage...

aaron, to my very untrained eye, i cannot detect too much of anything.

i am sure though with reds/ yellows, etc it would make a great shot.

of course, unfortunately with digital we can turn colour to b & w, you cannot do the reverse.

    shame.

it looks a good shot, but i can't say whether or not it 'grabs" me.

    sorry....

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Nothing to apologize for...LOL As I said, it was a fart around shot trying out the new meter. The contrasting of the leaves is a little on the subtle side. While knowing it's nothing special, part of me liked it, so thought I would post it up to get others' input. Thanks for taking the time to comment

I like how the leaves stand out from the background and you have a very nice DOF. Would you mind sharing your settings? I guess this was one from the Yashica? Nice shot Aaron

Thanks Greg I don't remember what the exact settings were... pretty sure it was 1/30 and either f/5.6 or f/8 I really need to start keeping a log

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Greg, forgot to add that this was Neopan 400. Jury is still out for me with this film. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet or maybe I'm just too used to shooting TMax or maybe because it is a bit expired (2/2000) and wasn't stored well but, its just sees "flat" to me. I keep having to add contrast to my scans to get them even to where they are. I dunno, I have a few more rolls of it, so we'll see. I have some Plus-X 125 in 120 that I think I'll start shooting and set aside the Neopan for a while

Well... "it would be better in color"...heheheh

No seriously.... I love the leaves... the way they float.... as well as the DoF....

One thing I keep having mixed emotions about is the crop... part of me loves it as is... another part is suggesting a little crop from the bottom! Almost a square crop!

You know... getting the exact settings when you shoot RAW is one of the greatest pleasures I have gotten by switching (almost completely) to digital.... you get everything....i love it....

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Thanks Marc The square crop is just because I have been trying to learn that layout since I'm shooting 6x6, so that may be the only format you see from me for a bit.

As for film over RAW, I agree, it does offer more control (or did for me as I'm not used to film yet) but, I've found I love the whole process of shooting film with an old camera. As the shooter, I end up getting much more involved in my shots and the whole process, and you just can't compare the feeling of uploading a memory card and editing some RAW files to pulling a freshly developed roll out of the tank. Some may think the whole film process is a PITA, time consuming, waste of money but, for me that whole process has become a new love. Though Carla could shoot me some morning's when she goes into the bathroom to get ready for the day and I have chemicals and film reels spread all out...LOL

    Re: Fall Foliage...

For the life of me i did not see it as a square crop :S

Anyway... like i said... I am not completely digital... and i don't think i will.... not any time soon anyway!

I love darkroom work and the only reason for my going digital is the speed and financial benefits...

Gotta love the scent of chemicals!

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Aaron - Sorry but the leaves do fade out into the background just a little too much here. If there was a few beams of light shinning through hitting them then this would fine in B&W, but I just have the hardest time picking them out there ....

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Nice shot ok but those leaves really need to pop out from the background. i think sharpness of the leaves may also be a slight issue too. I like what you are seeing though Aaron.

    Re: Fall Foliage...

Thanks GB and Overbeyond Unfortunately was rather dark along the trail and I didn't dare go any smaller of an aperture for fear of handshake For you "this should be in color people", have no fear...LOL I'm hoping to try my hand at C-41 or E-6 sometime in the not too distant future. I have started shooting some color stuff already but, I don't have anywhere near me to develop it so it sits in the freezer waiting.
