Sweet Cindy. Even the pole works.

i like the composition and the placement of the house along with a great sky to work with, but i have issues with the soil looking out of focus along with the house ,to me not the clearest image, when i look at the picture,my eyes are always bringing me to that opening in the sky above the house,

It almost looks like the white balance is off.... could be over saturation? Possibly B/W would give this a better aged look....

Otherwise, great composition and very nice photo!!!

Cindy, I tend to agree with Chow......this one looks made for b/w. Great composition.

Yes, mono could work very well with this one. But, I tend to think it is better in colour - but maybe adjusting the levels a little or at least correcting what (to me) looks like a slightly wrong colour cast.

Even so, it has a great sense of space in it - the picture gives a feeling of a very isolated place surrounded by a lot of emptiness. It's very evocative.

    Re: Empty Farmhouse

Thanks for the feedback folks! Interesting suggestions.

The color balance is correct for the time of day, about 45 minutes before sunset. In fact, I chose this spot because of the color of the light on the house and it's contrast with the color of the sky, which is so blue because it is the tail end of a rain storm. Since color was my primary motivation for stopping here, a black and white conversion isn't really what I'm looking for.

PBD - I see what you mean about the details around the front of the house here is a link to the full sized image which might reveal more of what you are looking for. Since the foreground didn't really hold anything of interest for me and the light was falling fast I went for sharpness on the house versus sharpness throughout the image. The whole shot would have been more effective with a tripod but I never seem to have one with me when I need one.

Cindy - So close yet so far. I see what you were going for here. I like the sky's color myself, but there seems to be a general lack of detail in the clouds. This may not be anything you did but just soft clouds that evening. I like the horizontal placement of the house, but not the vertical - seems too close for comfort to the bottom of the frame. I also want that pole to be plum, not tilted like that. As others have noted, the ground lacks detail, and if the house was only better lit, like when the sun shines though the clouds and illuminates one area when the background is still dark.

    Re: Empty Farmhouse

Oddly enough for me I want the horizon higher for this image too-if I had a choice. I can live with it as it is because the light and the sky are fantastic.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Re: Empty Farmhouse

More great comments, thanks so much!

GB - Here's a similar shot with a slightly different composition which might address some of the issues you mentioned. I took this shot a couple of different ways so as to take best advantage of the light and location.

Thanks MB & Len I felt the same way! See if this second version address the placement of the building in the frame. It doesn't include as much sky, which is why I decided to show the other shot first, but conveys a similar mood and more details of the house itself.

I think the tree and powerline add a lot to the first image although I understand why you cloned away the powerline on the tighter shot. I also prefer the slightly yellow light on the house in the first image.

As well. I guess your first take was the one.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Thanks MB,
The first shown is my personal preference as well. I like to go back and look through the shots I've cut though, just to see if I was thinking along the same lines when I was shooting, as a suggestion I receive here. (I second guess myself a lot in the field.) It takes a variety of approaches on the same subject sometimes to find the one that works best for you and giving examples of how I got from A to B is all part of the fun of critique.

The first shot is the one for me too! However, i really like the detail and interest produced by the nice cast of the golden light in the second.
