    Elf Country

    Photo from my weekend getaway

    What do you think ?

I still do not like the sky, it was plain gray at the time of the photo, just lowered the light a bit and made it cooler.

I was able to get some light on the trees and roots which were basically black on the original.

Good title for this shot, it leads me right into what you were showing. The sky does not bother me, since the the branches break it up. The roots are very interesting. They seem to come alive is some sort of a grisly scene of oily snakes, which contrasts with the peaceful island (?) just across the water.

The depth of the sharpness is amazing. I figured it would be f/22 or more but see it is f/8.
The sky isn't great but I don't think it is a problem either.
    Very good image.

    Re: Elf Country

I absolutely love this photo. Well done.
The sky is perfect. It works well as a plain smooth background for the tree branches to stand out from and the darkened and tinted tonng works very well with the other colors in the scene. Its simple attributes def add a mood to the overall image.
I really like the framing of the distant trees. the detail you brought out in the tree and foreground really helps. would not have been half as good if it were dark and without.
the painterly reflections in the smooth water is another big treat here.
    this is simple and exquisite.
    Great work

    Re: Elf Country

Yeah this is gorgeous. It looks a bit tilted to me, but I realize that may be an optical illusion given the foreground framing.

    Re: Elf Country

Armando - Congrats on the sticky. Talk about natural framing! This one works really nice, very good detail in the wood too. The only thing I'm not sure about is the bright spot on the trunk on the upper left. The shot also seems to be tilting a little to the CCW in the background, but lining it up, I am not sure that is so: could just be the way the trees lean back there at makes the viewer think that. (?)

    Re: Elf Country

    GB1,
    thanks

the top left bright spot seems to have smushed after resizing and sharpening for the web

Interesting that nobody has commented on noise on the trees, I think there is quite a noticeable amount, and also I think the greens are a bit too saturated

here is a sooc version of the photo, and an HDR version

On the hdr I like the texture of the trees and a lot less noise (!), also that the greens are not as saturated (easy to fix on the first version) , the details of the trunks of the far away trees are not as noticeable, I'm thinking that I have to learn to do layers and combine both the first version and the HDR version , so far I only have GIMP to do that

    Re: Elf Country

Hmm. I like the first post better than these two. The HDR may show a bit too much detail in the trees, plus I think the adjusted color of the distant trees isn't as aesthetically pleasing (but I know you don't like the saturation it has). The normal exposure is OK if one's going for contrast.

Good luck with Layers. I stink with them, but I have been experimenting this summer trying to figure out how to use them, in both PS and in Corel Photo-Paint. My summer project.
