    Edna

    last post for today- promise

took this picture with a point and shoot camera in color 400asa film (2 summers ago in Africa), then took it to the darkroom and made a b&w print. The pro's at Camera Corner say its impossible to get a good b&w print from a color negative, but were pleasently surprised when they saw this one.

Nice solid, photo. Do you think it would be better if the eyes were sharper? Maybe not...

I like this photo as is Jessica. She looks so beautiful and the textures of he r skin are so apparent you want to reach out and touch her. If you really felt you needed the extra sharpness in her eyes your could go in and do selective USM just on her eye area and that might help some but IMHO it's unnecessary. Beautiful picture.

I agree with CL on this - Brilliantly captured no need to change it, the eyes are sharp enough for me.

Yep, I agree too...I just love this photo. I looked at it several times yesterday and didn't have a chance to post a comment. Her expression is so sweet. You do a good job catching those fleeting "real" expressions on people...like with Susie Q. I also like her little dress...the patterns are really neat against her skin.

Add me to the Agreement With CL CLub. She's darling without it. Very nice capture. I like the diagonal comp as well.

I love it! My kinda photograph!
What a sweet little girl. Lovely expression and innocence in her eyes.
I think I would turn the contrast down a little though.
I keep getting told off for cutting people's heads off lol. I haven't seen anyone tell you off about that yet. ;)

Very nice. I want to make it to Africa someday soon. The kid here looks simple and unburdened by our sophisticated society, but also seems to be in a little pain (the eyes and mouth expression) - what do you think?

    Re: Edna

    Very nice shot.

    Though, kinda sad.

She has a sadness to her What was the setting here? and what country?

I love the way you've captured here essence and feelings and of coarse technically your shot is also nicely done. Great job.

    Re: Edna

Alison- do i sense a bit of bitterness? ;) alot of photographers cut of the top of their model's head, dont let one person's opinion make you disapointed If it helps... i think all of your portraits are marvelous, and your uniqueness (espicailly with the baby in the with the dolls and crafts) is inspiring.

GB1- dont let anything stop you from traveling... its so easy to get caught up in every day life. I can tell you that Edna was one of those kids who when you walk into the orphanage she's there with her arms open wide ready for you to pick her up. And her smile was contagious (you should see her when she's really happy!). As for the sadness, she was just like all the other kids there, desperate for attention but shy about it.... and that's what i think you see more than anything else.

    villenadecorte- thank you

LeeIs- you know... to be honest, when i took the picture and when i look at it now i dont see sadness. But everyone else does, so maybe its because I lived in it for a while, its hard to look from the outside and view it as you guys are.

As for the setting, well i didnt really take my camera to the orphange that much (kids like to steal stuff... and try to play with it even if its on your wrist or around your neck), they even tried to steal my glasses off my head. So I brought it my second to last, and last day. Oh, and i didnt mention... this is from an orphange in Ghana, African (in Obuasi, if anyone cares to know :P). I forget that you all cant read my mind and dont know the setting of the picture automatically .

    thanks for the comments guys

This image is beautiful and sad because It's hard to be sure whether the little girl is happy or upset. Her eyes are fine in my opinion - I dislike it some times when there is so much emphasis on the eyes that they begin to look artificially hard and ready to jump at you.
    I like it very much.
